Pat, I was stationed in Wheelus in 1952 with the 102nd AC&W Sq. for 18 months. I stayed in tents during that time. I continued to take fencing lessons at the Italian Club “The Uaddan/Casino “and was invited to participate in a Fencing Tournament, beat the previous year Junior fencer, I lost to the other eight. The fencer that beat everyone was an instructor in the British army. He broke his foil and asked to use mine, I obliged and I have that foil on the wall in my bedroom. He also put on a Saber demonstration the Prime Minister. I have color slides of Lido Beach and some taken at Leptis in b/w. If you are interested in photos that I have taken let me know. I am very happy to have found this site. Jerry |

My family was stationed in Tripoli from 1955 to 1958.I was there for 1st through 3rd grade. We lived in town for 2 years near King Idris's Palace then 1 year on base. I have quite a few pictures from there that I put in an album with as many memories accounted for as possible. My brother graduated in 1958. I also would love to go there again someday. My dad retired at Edwards AFB-so here I still am. |

Was with the 1st. pilotless Bomber Sqd in Germany. Came down to Libya in August of 1955 for "Operation Suntan" and fired a few B-61 Matador missles. I was one of those who ran a control radar site from the top of a mountain 75 miles South of Tripoli near Garian. I have some good pictures of "The Lady of Garian" plus many others from around Tripoli & Garian. There are or were other paintings in other buildings near by which I also have. Libya was "interesting" ! Sure hope I don't start getting a bunch of spam now that I signed your book ! |

I'm interested in hearing the experiences of other AF brats who were at Wheelus (I was born there in 1956). My parents have only a handful of photos, and websites come and go like the shifting desert sands. |

How great to find your site. I lived in Tripoli with my parents from April 1946 to the middle of 1951 from the age of 9. We lived in an ex-Italian officers mess on the Guiseppi Girardini Road in the Garden City, just a few yards inland from the Uaddan Hotel and backing on to the (then) King Idris' palace. I believe they are both still there. My father was in the Royal Engineers and, was the 2 i/c military public works involved with rebuilding the port, power stations, etc. after the war. I went to an Italian school there for the first 2 years, then to an army school before boarding school back in UK. We went to the Lido swimming, also to the Beach Club further along the coast (west). My father helped create a small golf course there. We went to Wheelus Field many times, bingo, dancing to the airforce band etc.especially on New Year's eve.It was a huge place. Also went to Gharian (I have photos of the Lsdy.)and as far as Nalut, Mizda etc. Exciting for a young boy seeing the aftermath of the war in the desert. So many memories of a place that I hope to visit again sometime. But will it have changed too much. I suspect so. Was anybody else in Tripoli at the same time ? |

My dad was Air Force, probably a staff or tech sergeant when we were stationed at Wheelus from 1953 to 1957. We lived downtown, somewhere near the King's Palace, I think. My best memories are the picnics at Sabratha and Leptus Magna. |

We lived downtown near the Garden City Circle. The address was 16 Via Cornaldi. (changed now of course) My older sister, Kathy, was a junior and senior. Thanks for the lovely pictures. |

My Dad was a fighter pilot in "Satan's Angels" 433rd TFS 8FTW. We lived on and off base in Tripoli from 65-68. My older brother and I started grade school there, one day in 1967 we went to school and there was a evacuation. It was the "8 day war", they took us directly from school to the base airport where we were put on a plane on our way to the States. My Mom was 8 1/2 mos. pregnant w/my littlest brother. We ended up in Long Beach Calif. for about 6 mos.then went back. I remember we lived right across the street from the Mediterranean Sea. We swam in it all the time. Now I look back at those times and realize that we were really living on the edge of danger! But that was Military life, I really respect my Mom for being so tough and able to handle all that! Cheers to all the Military Families who live overseas! Many hats off to all the Men who gave their all in fighting the Viet Nam War and all Vetetans Everywhere.... THANK YOU. Laurie |

My Dad was in the Airforce for 21 1/2 years and our family lived in Tropoli from 1961-64. Your website brought back many memories. We lived off base for a while and then moved to the base later. We lived by the ocean and I remember the bunkers around the area were filled with empty beer cans you could not use them if you needed to... My mom use to sing at the NCO club her name was Sarah Joyce Keys. My dad, Rodgers M. Keys was a Tech Sgt. but retired out of McDill AFB as an E-7 Master Seargent. Again, Thanks for the memories!!! |

My father was in REME and was stationed in Tripoli. My mother, sister, brother and I lived in a ground floor flat in a street somewhere in the center of Tripoli. I was a young boy of about 8, I remember going quite regularly to a beach for army personell. We were picked up by army truck to attend the army school every morning with no afternoon lessons as it was to hot. My father had a Huber Hawk car and we went to beaches and the Roman ruins at Sabratha and Leptis Magna also went up the Gebble mountains think that was how they were spelled I know it was scary as they were winding roads that had sheer drops down the mountains. We were evacuated when Suez kicked off and returned when it was over. I loved the place and would love to go back some day. |

A delightful site which brings back so many memories. I was a member of the British Army serving in Tripoli with the REME from Feb 1957 to May 1959.My bases whilst there were 5 Medium Wksps REME which became Station Wksps REME,located at Gurgi and HQ at Azzizia Barracks. I well remember the beautiful beaches such as The Lido and our very own Piccola Capri. The Lux cinema was very popular. Also I recall going to Wheelus Air Base and there was car racing on during one such visit. I still have some photo's taken on that occasion. We,from the British Forces, were amazed at the size of Wheelus and the marvellous facilities there.Quite luxurious compared to the camp I was in.Our living accommodation was tents. Other places of interest that come to mind are Leptis Magna,Sabratha and Garian and of course The Garian Lady there. I still look up sites displaying information on Tripoli and Libya and have often thought about returning there for a visit. I wonder what it might be like these days and from what I can tell it must be quite different in some respects. Has anyone made a return visit after such a long time since they were stationed there,I wonder.Once again I must compliment you on the site Pat and I'm sure there are many, like me,who have been so pleased to have discovered it. |
