6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Nearly midday and no playlist up yet for April 10 that I can find, surely they had pre-planned the list and could have posted it in the morning or do they work on a public holiday to put this together, very dedicated if they do as I am sure the ABC doesn't like paying triple time?

Anyhow, the competition details are up. 12 missing songs to be deciphered and a most wanted playlist of 20 to submit via an online entry.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Yes, I too am hanging out for the Separage playlist so I can enter the competition.

One thing I didn't like though was, when you read the terms and conditions, the 3rd point the 'winner' is based on is how 'original' and how much they like your playlist, from memory.

In other words, even if you get all the guesses & reasons right, if another person has done the same but chooses 20 Nick Cave videos, they will probably win over you

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

OK the 3rd point actually says (referring to the playlist):

"best, most original, and creative".

I don't see the need to add this condition, personally.

To break it down:

'best' = the one with the most Nick Cave, Nirvana, Bjork, Daft Punk & Aphex Twin videos

'most original and creative' = the one with the least Nick Cave, Nirvana, Bjork, Daft Punk & Aphex Twin videos, which = a contradiction of sorts.

Though the 'creative'-ness of the winner's playlist can't be that creative that it contains Samantha Fox, Stacey Q or any non-'Take On Me' a-ha videos

It's going to be difficult to choose an 'original and creative' playlist if half of the not-so 'original and creative' choices aren't even in the Rage library.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Rage Twitter recently put up

"Racing to finish the playlist for #6degreesofseparage... only a few more hours until the comp opens!"

As far as best, most original and creative goes I am sure I could list one that would tick all boxes but when there is no clip for any of the choices in the rage library how would that possibly win? Even if I listed 15 clips that I know are on Countdown or Rock Arena episodes I am fairly certain they will not dig those out either, even though it is physically possible. D A M N, I wish I knew what the Rage 30,000 clip catalogue consists of as I wouldn't have thought Philip Michael Thomas would have been there.

I have a feeling I will be wasting a few hours of my life but puzzles and challenges do intrigue and it's for a good cause - my own. Google may well be getting a workout if need to know who Aphex Twin's producer was or what their link to Nick Cave and Daft Punk is. Apparently there will be clues, which no doubt I will be relying heavily on.

There will be no mugs on TV (if there were then I would hope CJ could have that honour as I would believe it could be a sight to behold), so it is every man, woman and child for themselves.

Good luck to fellow posters on this forum. It is being shown on Wildcard night as I suspect that Rage are hoping for the entry to be a bit Wildcard as well - hopefully that will rule out spotty little 15 year olds who want to see "old" clips from 2008 - age is about the only thing I have going for me as with that comes wisdom, experience and knowledge but also senility, nose hair and sensible shoes so I just hope I'm on the right side of the line.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

It's a bit unfortunate that it eats into Wildcard time, but it should be interesting to see what the winner chooses.

Although as others have said Rage should at least have revealed what they have in their library so people can choose songs with confidence - much akin to flying an aeroplane in a fog really.

I tend to assume it'll be leaning more to the 'alternative' range than having any classic 80's commercial classics as I would choose - my list would certainly be a Nick Cave free zone!

I guess one could compile a definative list of which clips Rage do have by examining the playlists from 1998 onwards - although there's no guarantee they still have them - apart from the 500 or so Nick Cave, Bjork clips of course......

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

It's going to be difficult to choose clips, because who knows what Rage do/do not have access to still. If I didn't know that 'The Sun Always Shines On TV' wasn't in their library, I may have chosen it, even though I have a copy of the a-ha DVD, because it deserves more exposure.

The moderator is making me laugh (unintentionally) stating that a Studio 31 performance of Gyan's 'Wait' was shown on Countdown Revolution. It's not technically their fault if whoever catalogued the tape as such back in the day got it wrong... but you would think that, working for a music video show on the ABC, you'd at least have a rudimentary knowledge of the timeline of ABC's previous music videos shows - i.e. Studio 31 was part of the original Countdown, not Countdown Revolution. Also, 'Wait' supposedly being stored on an old Rock Arena tape makes little sense - didn't Rock Arena finish in 1988? 'Wait' wasn't released until the 2nd half of 1989.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Can someone break this whole thing down to me i n simple terms?

Why would the Play List for the competition be up this weekend???????

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Funny enough I suggested Bonnie Tyler - Holding Out For A Hero (although I didn't think they'd have it) to be played after Meatloaf GPs and they have dragged it out early. The first 2 are linked from the movie soundtrack Footloose. I guess that's how it works.

Looking at some of those guess spaces it seems I will be busy over Easter, nothing has hit me yet and I have to find 12...a few sleepless nights coming up.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

I assume we need to link the video to the clip before and after?

I've worked out one of the missing clips, but need to link it to the video following it still.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

I think the best way to do it would be work out what links all the listed songs to get an idea of what they are looking for. Who knows, there may even be a pattern.

Would Ben Folds and Ben Lee follow purely because of the name Ben or is it deeper?

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

I think I can link at least 4 Nick Cave songs as long as square pegs fit in round holes and I think I could fit Around The World into 2 gaps, just need to work out where Windowlicker goes and which Bjork song to choose.

Man, I'm busy talking to myself while everybody else is hitting Wikipedia.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

It's much harder than I thought it would be. I've only looked at 4 so far. I've figured out 2, and have guessed the connections for another 2 but not the songs. I will say that it's taken me 2+ hours to get this 'far' though. Just as well they're giving us a week!

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

I don't think I will even enter!

This looks FAR TOO HARD!

For example:

How is THE EURYTHMICS Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)

linked to

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE What Goes Around... Comes Around (SBME)

What on earth would come after Eurythmics and before Justin Timberlake???!!!

WOW, forget it!

Best thing about this is that I will get a FULL version of Help by Bananarama and Bonnie Tyler's Holding Out For A Hero.

I am OFFICIALLY out of the race as of NOW!

Good Luck guys!

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

By the way,

How is one supposed to know what is missing. Do you have to guess the EXACT right song rage will play in the missing bit or just the artist or band??!!!!!

If you have to guess the song then that is IMPOSSIBLE!

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Jason you have to guess the exact song. This makes it difficult, because, for example, I have figured out who one of the artists is, but it could be any one of their songs, from what I can tell so far.

The idea is to think of a song that has something in common with the song/artist before and after.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

I see....

Bananarama and Shakesepear's Sister are obviously linked.

Then Eurythmics is linked to Siobhan Fahey

So what is linked to Eurythmics, hmmmmmmm....

So the missing band or artist is linked to Eurythmics, I have no fricking idea.

Has it got to do with that track "Lilly Was Here" with Candy Dulfer", is that what should come after Eurythmics?

HMMM!!!!!!!!

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

The promo also states:

"The playlist has every sixth clip missing and replaced by a clue.

Your job will be to decipher the clues and figure out as many of the missing videos as you can!"

All I can see is "GUESS What Goes Here (Rage)".

What are these clues?? Are they available on Facebook or were they in the promos they have played on Rage recently??? I don't even have Facebook or Twitter, am I missing something by not being in the loop??

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

I'm thinking the 'clue' is what comes before and after, but yes, not a very easy 'clue'.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

If my guestimates are right so far, the answers aren't necessarily easily googled - they require some 'lateral' thinking.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

I've had a look and tried to work it all out but it all seems way too hard and I really couldn't be bothered!
Very much doubt that they'd pick my playlist anyway....way too obscure!!

But good luck to all those that do take the time to dechiper it - hopefully one of the Rage/Countdown Memories messageboard regulars get to win.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

There could be numerous links between songs so it would be a fluke to get it right.

CJ asked what would link Eurythmics to Justin Timberlake then here are a couple:

Annie Lennox did a duet with Alicia Keys - a cover of REM's Everybody Hurts.

Alicia Keys teamed with Justin Timberlake so the missing song could be Alicia Keys but as to which song is anyone's guess.

But then you could also say Eurythmics did a duet with Aretha Franklin and she was born in Memphis Tennessee as was Justin Timberlake.

This is probably impossible. I can't even work out the links between some of the actually listed songs, so what chance will I have with those gaps. Is the link between Bonnie Tyler and Bananarama that they both performed at Pinktober 2009?

I think I will try an entry with Nick Cave as every selection and see if I can win with the most stupid entry.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Guru, here's what I think is the probable link between Bananarama's 'Help' & Bonnie Tyler's 'Holding Out For a Hero':

'Holding Out For a Hero' was covered by Frou Frou & Jennifer Saunders for the Shrek 2 soundtrack... and Jennifer Saunders appears in the 'Help' video as a member of 'Lananeeneenoonoo', the Bananarama parody.

As for the link between Eurythmics & Justin Timberlake, I think I know what the song is, but I'm not 100% sure on how it is linked to one of them. I'm keeping my guess to myself though as I want to win

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Hats off to you guys that are keeping up with this stupid competition.

Even if I got all the questions, rage wouldn't pick my list anyway.

Like Christine, mine would be to obscure.

rage don't even have "Forbidden Colours" by Sylvian & Sakamoto so what chance do I have of them having anything from the 80s I want to pick!

If even 10 people get the right answers, let's face it. rage will pick what they like on people's lists!

I really hope that someone from this Forum of mine win's or a regular rage Forum person!!! This competition is beyond rigged!

What rage think is Original, Creative and whatever they want is NOT in sync with what most of us here are into musically!!!!

Good luck Guru and Nathan!!!

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Man,this is hard!I don't even know half the songs in the playlist.Despite this,I've found some possible links-

*Dave Stewart from Eurythmics was once married to Bananarama's Siobahn Fahey

*Queen & Duran Duran both have drummers named Roger Taylor

*With Duran Duran and Robert Palmer, its gotta be The Power Station(Andy & John Taylor from DD were part of that group)

*The Mickey Mouse Club with Timberlake/Aguilera/Spears

*Salt N Pepa & En Vogue did Whatta Man together

*The Sex Pistols might be after The Ramones as the Pistols & Nirvana both have LP's with Never Mind in the title

*The Pistols after The Ramones 'cause of the punk connection with both

*Garbage & Marilyn Manson-Shirley Manson fronts Garbage so the surname Manson there

*The Supremes/Beyonce/Jay Z-the film Dreamgirls is loosely based on The Supremes,Beyonce was in that film and she's married to Jay Z

*Could be an AC/DC song after The Easybeats 'cause of Angus & Malcolm being related to George Young from The Easybeats and George Young, along with Easybeats bandmate Harry Vanda produced 6 of AC/DC's LP's

*Chaka Khan/Whitney Houston-both did I'm Every Woman

*Jack White's tied in with The White Stripes &The Dead Weather

*Dave Grohl's tied in with The Foo Fighters & Queens Of The Stone Age

*Maybe Pearl Jam's before Nirvana-grunge link

*Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins-Butch Vig produced LP's for both and he's the drummer for Garbage

*Whitney/Aretha-both have been on the same record label(Arista)and worked with the same producer(Narada Michael Walden)

*Dare I suggest the most overused term "diva" for either The Supremes & Beyonce links and/or the Chaka Khan/Whitney/Aretha links?

If I think of any more,I'll let you know and good luck to anyone here who plans to enter

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Oh yeah-I'm quite proud of the fact none of my guesses involved Nick Cave!

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Thanks for the hints John, but be careful not to give *too* much away, as you might win yourself!

If one of my guesses is right, I'd be surprised if many others got it, as at first it seems quite removed from the artists either side. But then, it could be any one of this artist's songs.

I wonder if anyone will actually get all 12 guesses right?

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Don't worry Nathan,I'm not entering. An hour's not long enough to guest program Rage.Anyway, should someone from this forum win and includes one of my theories in their entry(providing its correct)-can they shout me a song in their playlist?
I promise right here & now it WON'T be a Nick Cave song,or any of the ones that get picked by GP's all the time(ie.Windowlicker)-it'd be one of my Wild Card 4 suggestions.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Nathan
I think you appear to be the only one taking it seriously. I would if I had the time but I don't.

Emminem into Salt 'n' Pepa, Philadelphia Grand Jury into Buffalo, The Vines into Erykah Badu, Lil' Jon into Razorlight, Eve into The White Stripes etc. I know nothing about these bands as far as details go and would have to spend days googling for connections, a waste of time if they wouldn't play my choices anyhow. I can't even think of a link between Ramones and Nirvana that would connect to each other.

I think the link between Lady Gaga and Queen is that Lady Gaga got her name from a mispelled text intended to read Radio Ga Ga. Radio Ga Ga was on the The Works album as was Hammer To Fall so the missing song might be Queen - Radio Ga Ga.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

> I think you appear to be the only one taking it
> seriously. I would if I had the time but I don't.

Ha ha, that's almost a back-handed compliment. It turns out that I do have next week off, so will 'have time' probably to attempt some more guesses. But I must say, I was over it after 2 hours last night, and haven't looked at it again today. So much work required without guarantee of winning

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

I am not bothering as it's rigged anyway.

In the end no matter if we get the answers they wouldn't go for my Playlist anyway!

It's ridiculous. Nathan, I HOPE you win!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know I would see some Pop GEMS!

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Too right, a f@#k'n joke! You would have to be einstein to work it out, or a record producer who has worked with most of the artists featured - and I ain't one of them!

I have a conspiracy theory - I think it is done so no one will get it. Then the 1 hour programming is secretly done by Nick Cave playing all his fave songs! Then I'm sure the rage crew are all standing in the corner 'getting off' to his programming and twittering at the same time. 'This really cool guy just came into rage and programmed an hour of his fave videos and has left the Best of Nick Cave DVD on the couch'- he must be a fan! LOL

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Ha ha Michael, I wouldn't be surprised.

After my 3rd day attempting it, I've now got guesses for 9 of the 12 missing tracks; I think 4 are likely to be right. I still need to make a guess for 3, but think I know who the artist is. Narrowing it down to 1 of their songs is the killer in such cases; it could be any.

If in the slim chance I do 'win', Rage better be prepared to scour the archives!

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

They have finally put some clues up about an hour ago, maybe it's game on again if I can decipher the clues.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Let's just say that some of my guesses were wrong after seeing these clues . For instance, I guessed Electric Six's 'Radio Ga Ga' would be between Lady Ga Ga and Queen, for obvious reasons. I would not have guessed the clip I now think it is in a million years without the clue from Rage. I don't see how anyone could guess it without the clue.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Apparently no one has picked it yet. I am relying on you Nathan. Finally figured out the Ramones/Nirvana link thanks due to the clue as Courtney Love appeared in the Ramones clip which was made in 1988 - 10 years after the song was released, still don't know which Hole song you would pick.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Guru, I think I've spent enough time on it now that I can't be bothered 'researching' any more. I submitted a few entries tonight, hoping one of them stands a good chance. I think 4-5 of my guesses are likely to be correct; the rest is a bit hit and miss. My playlist chosen, on the other hand, is virtually instantly-disqualifying material based on Rage's phobia of anything that isn't "alternative" and loved by Triple J.

I reached a point yesterday when I realised... if anyone DOES get all 12 guesses correct, then they deserve to win more than I do, because they'd practically have to be a genius to get them all right.

One of the hardest things I think about this competition is that there could easily be more than one plausibly correct answer for several of the questions. For instance, I've worked out 4 guesses for the first one (each by a different artist) with a plausible explanation for each.

I do wonder though... how on earth are rage going to have time to tally all the entries and work out the winner? Unless they have some kind of automated system happening.

Also, are they going to reveal what the correct answers were on the playlist, after 5pm tomorrow? If one of my guesses is correct (which it probably isn't), it's a video I've wanted to get a good copy of for ages.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Nathan
Having nothing better to do I have also decided to submit an entry. It's not every day that you could have a shot at GPing Rage so it's best not to die wondering.

I am fairly happy with about 5 of my links, although choice of song will probably rub me out there, another 3 were educated stabs in the dark (would you believe I was trying to link Buddhists) while the last 4 were clearly just re-arranging deckchairs on the Titanic.

If nothing else then my playlist suggestion will blow me out of the water anyhow.

In half an hour I will be acutely aware of the futility of my actions.

I hope you do well Nathan as I would hate to think that the winner will be a fan of hip hop.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

^ Ha ha, thanks Guru.

Their 10-11am Six Degrees playlist tomorrow morning is terrible. Don't think I'll even be recording that bit.

I feared the playlist for the Saturday night of this special would be horrible, but I was pleasantly surprised. The opening 5 songs have to be one of the best/least expected to start a night of Rage ever, I think.

After it hits 5, does anyone want to post their guesses/reasons here, so we can compare? Oh, and your playlist too if you entered.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

OK, it's after 5pm. These were my guesses (I spent a LOT of time with google, wikipedia & youtube to help me). I submitted multiple entries to cover a few different combinations when I was not sure.

I've bolded the ones I think are 'definitely' right, underlined the ones I think are probably right but aren't sure, and Italicised the ones that it could be but aren't entirely sure. The others are ones that are basically just guesses.

Tom Waits ‘It’s All Right With Me’. This Tom Waits song is on the ‘Red Hot + Blue’ Cole Porter covers album, on which Annie Lennox from Eurythmics also performs a song (Ev’ry Time We Say Goodbye). Scarlett Johansson plays Justin Timberlake’s girlfriend in the ‘What Goes Around… Comes Around’ video. She released an album, ‘Anywhere I Lay My Head’ which features 10 Tom Waits covers.

Scarlett Johansson ‘Falling Down’. Scarlett Johansson plays Justin Timberlake’s girlfriend in the ‘What Goes Around… Comes Around’ video. Falling Down is a Tom Waits cover. The video shows her having her make-up applied (as in the Eurythmics ‘Beethoven’ video). Both videos feature a young girl portraying a younger version of the singer.

2:

Wham! ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’. Both George Michael and Andrew Ridgely of Wham! wear ‘Choose Life’ t-shirts in the ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ video. Roger Taylor from Queen wears a ‘Choose Life’ t-shirt in Queen’s ‘Hammer To Fall’ video. At the end of Lady Gaga’s ‘Paparazzi’ video, there’s a 911 call where Lady Gaga confesses, “I just killed my boyfriend”, who is played by Alexander Skarsgård. Alexander Skarsgård dies in the movie ‘Zoolander’ during a gasoline explosion whilst ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ is playing.

3:

Hole **song?

or

Courtney Love Love **song?

Courtney Love appears in the Ramones’ ‘I Wanna Be Sedated’ video. She was married to Kurt Cobain from Nirvana, and had a child with him.

4:

2 Pac featuring Dr. Dre ‘California Love’. Eminem was signed to Dr Dre’s record label, Aftermath Entertainment, and produced three songs and provided vocals for two tracks on Eminem's debut album ‘The Slim Shady LP’. 2 Pac was signed to the Death Row label, which was co-founded by Dr. Dre, and appears in the ‘Whatta Man’ video.

5:

Murray Head ‘One Night In Bangkok’. Blur’s ‘Country House’ video features scenes set on a giant ‘Escape From the Rat Race’ game board. The ‘One Night In Bangkok’ video features scenes set on a giant chess board game. Both videos are set on giant board games. A photo of Murray Head was used on the sleeve for The Smith’s ‘Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before’, which Mark Ronson performs a cover of with ‘Stop Me’.

The Smiths ‘This Charming Man’. ‘Country House’ is produced by Stephen Street, who produced The Smiths. ‘A jumped-up country boy’ is a common misheard lyric in ‘This Charming Man’ (correct lyrics – ‘a jumped up pantry boy’). Mark Ronson’s ‘Stop Me’ is a cover of The Smiths’ ‘Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before’.

Bob Marley ‘Rat Race’. An ‘Escape From the Rat Race’ board game features in the Country House video, and “I’m caught in a rat race” is a line in the lyrics of the song. Bob Marley sings a song called ‘Rat Race’. Bob Marley was born in the country village of Nine Mile in Jamaica's St. Ann Parish. Bob Marley sings ‘No Woman No Cry’, and the Mark Ronson ‘Stop Me’ video features women crying abundant animated tears.

Bob Marley ‘No Woman No Cry’. Bob Marley was possibly born in a country house, being born in the country village of Nine Mile in Jamaica's St. Ann Parish. Bob Marley sings ‘No Woman No Cry’, and the Mark Ronson ‘Stop Me’ video features women crying abundant animated tears.

Morrissey ‘Suedehead’. ‘Country House’ is produced by Stephen Street, who produced The Smiths, and Morrissey was their lead singer. ‘Country House’ is a song about leaving the city and moving to the countryside. In the video for ‘Suedehead’, the initial setting is in the city, but Morrissey is later seen entering a barn, driving a tractor, and being in a field with cows (all things associated with the country). Mark Ronson’s ‘Stop Me’ is a cover of The Smiths’ ‘Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before’.

Part 2:

6:

The Presets **song?. Coldplay and The Presets performed at the ‘Sound Relief’ concert in 2009. Julian Hamilton of The Presets co-wrote Silverchair’s ‘Straight Lines’.

I thought maybe 'My People', since both it and 'Straight Lines' feature the singer walking throughout the video.

7:

Architecture In Helsinki song?**
Simon Berckelman (aka Berkfinger) from Philadelphia Grand Jury was an assistant engineer on Architecture In Helsinki’s ‘Places Like This’ album, from which this track is taken. New Buffalo remixed Architecture In Helsinki’s song ‘The Cemetery’ on their remix album ‘We Died, They Remixed’.

I thought possibly ‘Heart It Races’, ‘Hold Music’,
or ‘Like It Or Not’, as they were on the album Berkfinger assisted with the engineering... or:

Architecture In Helsinki 'It'5'. The videos for both 'It'5' and 'Cheer Me Up Thank You' are set outside in a park setting, and the video for 'Going To the Casino' is also set in an outdoor setting.

8:

Outkast ‘Ms Jackson’. The Vines covered Outkast’s ‘Ms Jackson’. Eryka Badu has a son with Andre 3000 of Outkast.

9:

Vampire Weekend ‘Oxford Comma’. ‘Get Low’ is referenced by Vampire Weekend in their song ‘Oxford Comma’ (“Lil’ Jon, he always tells the truth”, “first the window, then it’s through the wall” – the Lil’ Jon song says “to the window, to the wall”). Richard Ayoade, who directs the ‘Oxford Comma’ video, has appeared in ‘The Mighty Boosh’ series, as have Razorlight in an episode where they are looking for a new sound.

10:

Alicia Keys & Jack White ‘Another Way To Die’. Eve has collaborated with Alicia (on ‘Gangsta Lovin’’), and Alicia has collaborated with Jack White of The White Stripes (on ‘Another Way To Die’).

11:

The Black Eyed Peas ‘My Humps’. Alanis Morissette covered The Black Eyed Peas’ ‘My Humps’. ‘Gone Going’ by The Black Eyed Peas interpolates "Gone" by Jack Johnson.

12:

Grace Jones ‘Walking In the Rain’. Grace Jones played the role of May Day in the James Bond movie ‘A View To a Kill’, for which Duran Duran sing the theme song. She covered Flash and the Pan’s ‘Walking In the Rain’. Flash and the Pan were Harry Vanda & George Young, former members of The Easybeats.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Here were my 20 selections. I included a handful that I know they definitely have so I wasn't outright excluded. I also chose all fullscreen videos, so no need for ratio changing:

1. Nik Kershaw ‘I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me’ (preferably the original concept video rather than the live footage version) (the concept version isn't on his DVD)

2. Monaco ‘Sweet Lips’

3. Space ‘Begin Again’

4. Nina Hagen ‘Smack Jack’

5. Coldcut ‘Doctorin’ the House’

6. The The ‘Slow Train To Dawn’ (Neneh Cherry features on the song & in the video)

7. Youssou N’Dour ‘Undecided’ (Neneh Cherry features in the song, but can't remember if she was in the video as I only saw it once)

8. Bananarama ‘Love In the First Degree’

9. Bangles ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’ (not on their DVD or VHS)

10. Voice of the Beehive ‘Monsters and Angels’

11. Yazz ‘Where Has All the Love Gone’

12. Nik Kershaw ‘The Riddle’ (not on his DVD)

13. Oingo Boingo ‘Stay’

14. Alannah Myles – Song Instead of a Kiss

15. Transvision Vamp ‘Revolution Baby’

16. Mel & Kim ‘That’s the Way It Is’

17. Sabrina ‘Sexy Girl’

18. Eighth Wonder ‘I’m Not Scared’

19. Deborah Harry ‘Strike Me Pink’

20. Tori Amos ‘Winter’

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Great Playlist, I really HOPE you win!

Debbie Harry's "Tickle Me Pink" is just GORGEOUS +

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Nathan
You should win just on effort alone. I only spent 90 minutes on it and came up with some absolute oddities as I didn't research with as much depth.

Can't even remember most of my answers.

1 I also went for Aretha Franklin but couldn't find the Biel clue that you did. I chose Freeway Of Love as Respect is the last song played on the night and I didn't think they would play it twice.

2 I couldn't work that out but I think you have it following the clues. I went with my earlier Radio Ga Ga thoughts but am obviously off the mark. Your guess Wham! ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ is just brilliant detective work - linking t-shirts in clips.

3 I chose Hole's Miss World for no real reason

4 I was also looking for a Dr Dre link but didn't know that he had featured in Whatta Man - I know nothing about rap crap

5 Keith Allen is the actor in Country House video. His daughter is Lily Allen and she was associated with Mark Ronson so I chose a Lily Allen song

6 I chose Powderfinger as they toured with both Coldplay and silverchair. I just noticed on a Powderfinger forum there is a huge discussion about 6 degrees competition, wish I'd spotted that earlier.

7 Also chose Architecture in Helsinki, no idea on song

8 Obviously OutKast Ms Jackson as this came up straight away when I googled it.

9+10 I couldn't work those out but I think you have it

11 Didn't find the Black Eyed Peas Link, the only song I found that Alanis covered was King Of Pain by The Police. The only link between Sting and Jack Johnson are that they are Buddhists - I told you I was struggling

12 I should have been able to work out the Grace Jones link but didn't.

My playlist selections would have made any of the above void anyhow.

Are we going to have to wait until Saturday night to see who's right?

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

> You should win just on effort alone.

Yeah, it's only sinking in now what a waste of time it all was if I don't win (which is a strong possibility).

> Respect is the last song played on the night and I
> didn't think they would play it twice.

Whoops, would have helped if I bothered to look at the rest of the playlist. I only entered 'Respect' on a few entries. I'm hoping it's the Tom Waits one, as that makes the most sense I think... but they haven't played the video since at least 1997 (thanks google), so who knows if they even have it. I had to ask a Eurythmics fan for the connection to Tom Waits.

> Your guess Wham! ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’ is
> just brilliant detective work - linking t-shirts

It did help watching the videos after following the clues. Never would have got it otherwise.

> I chose Hole's Miss World for no real reason

Yeah that was a tough one, it could have been any Hole/Courtney Love song. They only have one Courtney Love video, so I think it has a chance of being that ('Mono'); but 'Miss World' was also my first guess.

> I know nothing about rap crap

Me neither; wikipedia came in very handy.

> Keith Allen is the actor in Country House video.
> His daughter is Lily Allen and she was associated
> with Mark Ronson so I chose a Lily Allen song

Well spotted; that seems logical. Though is there any 'born in a country house' connection? I know nothing about Lilly Allen (only enough to know that I wouldn't like her).

I'm hoping it's Murray Head as I really want a good copy of that video, but it seems to obscure for Rage; it's never been aired on Rage as far as I know.

> I chose Powderfinger as they toured with both
> Coldplay and silverchair. I just noticed on a
> Powderfinger forum there is a huge discussion

Well spotted. I was nearly going to guess them, as there was bound to be a Triple J-loved pub rock 'alternative' band in there somewhere. The thing that got me though was the artist has performed with 'some' of the members of Coldplay/Silverchair... which made me think possibly Paul Mac/Itch-E & Scratch-E, but I didn't enter that guess.

> 11 Didn't find the Black Eyed Peas Link

My first guess (and hope) was Seal's 'Crazy', as it's another clip I'd love to get a digital copy of, but I couldn't find any Jack Johnson connection.

> The only link between Sting and Jack Johnson are
> that they are Buddhists - I told you I was
> struggling

lol, that was a good link! I'd never heard of Jack Johnson before.

> I should have been able to work out the Grace
> Jones link but didn't.

I only got it from knowing Duran's 'A View To a Kill' was a bond theme; so thought there had to be a connection there somewhere.

> My playlist selections would have made any of the
> above void anyhow.

If anyone does get all 12 guesses correct, I really hope that Rage hate their playlist; because they'll have to win.

> Are we going to have to wait until Saturday night
> to see who's right?

It looks that way . But still the winner won't be announced until after then?

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Well I got the first guess wrong . Got the right artist though.

I can't believe they played 'You're History' instead of 'Stay', AND kept the 'The' in Eurythmics despite saying they'd taken the advice on board/correcting it in the playlist!

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Well I got 7 right:

2. Wham! - Wake Me Up Before You Go Go
3. Hole - Awful (only because I submitted combinations of entries with every Hole video Rage have)
7. Architecture In Helsinki - Hold Music (only because I entered combinations of 4 of their videos)
8. Outkast - Ms Jackson
9. Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma
11. The Black Eyed Peas - My Humps
12. Grace Jones - Walking In the Rain

I got the artist right, but not the song, for:

1. Tom Waits
6. The Presets (I entered a few songs of theirs, but I don't think I did 'This Boy's In Love')
10. Alicia Keys (I was nearly going to enter 'Fallin', but didn't :-( )

In other words, I probably won't win. I can't see any particular reason why they selected those specific Tom Waits, Hole, The Presets, Architecture In Helsinki, or Alicia Keys songs.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Nathan
I would believe that your entry would still be better than anything anyone else would have tried. If you don't get it I would think it would only be because of your playlist submission.

The only thing I worked out besides the obvious Hole, OutKast and Architecture In Helsinki selections was getting Lily Allen, so at any rate you thrashed the pants off me.

I would think a few thousand people may have considered entering but after seeing how difficult it was I would be surprised if more than 100 actually submitted entries. While most would certainly have been better than me I would think that picking 10 out of 12 (not worrying about exact songs) is going to be as good as it gets. Best of luck with it.

As it will be on Wildcard night I am just hoping to see The Promise - Walking With A Weight and I would be happy enough with that.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

So who won this comp? Was it announced at around 4.30am when the playlist finished?

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

Yes guru but you spent probably a tenth of the time I did on it. I feel my efforts were wasted. Someone on the Facebook page suggested they run another 6 degrees competition next year. If they do, I seriously doubt I'd bother entering again.

Before they put the clues on the playlist, I guessed that Natalie Imbruglia might come between Coldplay and Silverchair. She shares a closer link with them (ex-wife of Silverchair singer, had r'ship with Coldplay singer & sung a song co-written with them) than The Presets! Who would have guessed the Presets without the clue? I only picked them out of luck & because I couldn't be bothered googling any more.

I can't see any rhyme or reason for why, for example, that specific Hole song was chosen over others. How are people supposed to have guessed that?

Michael, the winner wasn't announced last night, but they're saying it will be announced next week on the website.

Re: 6 Degrees of Sepa-Rage

*********I WON!******************8

Got the call from Nadine at Rage about 40 mins ago. OMG it was very surreal.

My videos will air in the 10-11am slot next Saturday (May 1).

PS I haven't had internet access at home for the last week for anyone I'm trading with & can't access my yahoo account at work either . Hope to be back soon.
