Re: rage goes retro '3' - FULL 'COUNTDOWN' ARCHIVAL INFORMATION ON EACH EPISODE - Sat 19th Jan,

I knew you would put the Poison cover up but they didn’t look like that in 1989, they put away their make up in 1989, so need l say more ....

When they did Countdown Revolution, they didn’t look like that at all where as when Dee Schneider Of Twisted Sister did Countdown, he at least looked like he did on the record cover.

Jason, thanks for your info on all the countdown episodes. You typed xmas in the 1985 episode. This is Very offensive! CHRISTMAS is Dear to a lot of people.
I now see what you are talking about, X MAS is actually the way the archivist of the time spelt it for Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's X Mas'. So maybe contact the ABC archivist about such ridiculous matters

At least Painters and Dockers had a punk attitude to them.

Hair Metal Hard Rock bands at least had some GLAM to them in the 1984 to 1986 era, by 1989 there was no trashy camp to their looks at all with Roxus and other hard rock bands by 1989 so that is why I mentioned Roxus. Yawwwwwwn

And as far as Bananarama, they are my all time favourite girl band and I went to London in 2017 to see them with Siobhan but I loathe their 1989 tacky era and can’t stand Jacque.

Bring on wall to wall Countdown’s next year as the themes this year I knew that with these themes January would lead to The Factory which demonstrated that wasting time with reports on toilet urinals, boredom and surage plants were of no benefit to retro time for MUSIC and Recovery hell coming this Saturday.

At least Countdown, even 1987 concentrated on music, Molly May have mentioned sports but they didn’t show 15 minutes of it
Jacquie gets a raw deal from some \'fans\'. She wasn\'t as involved as the others (well, overlooking Keren\'s often vanity let\'s-split-it-three-ways songwriting credits) creatively - but they wouldn\'t allow her to be. She was just a salaried performer, effectively, and had little to no say in how the group did anything. The girls didn\'t want her in the group - she was forced upon them by everyone around them telling them that Bananarama needed to be a 3 piece. Any wonder she wanted out. Just as Siobhan did again. I think Sara is the problem with Bananarama, personality/politics-wise.

As for Roxus, I\'m not a fan, but in retrospect, \'Stand Back\' was alright. Painters & Dockers were, in my opinion, just another boring pub rock band. Roxus at least had some synths on some of the tracks.

No trashy camp in 1989? Hello, Collette and Reynolds Girls!
The Reynolds Girls song was so lol bad! As for camp lets not forget Transvision Vamp or Deee-Lite.

Siobhan actually wanted to stay in Bananarama this time around as l met her several times in the UK and Bananarama have said Siobhan May be back at some point. Jaquie was just an imposter and Sara and Karen didn’t want her in the band but London Records wanted a replacement and Sara and Karen have made it clear they wanted to continue as a duo but had no control.
I'm not sure what Jacquie was meant to be pretending to be when she she joined the group. She has said that she realised she made a huge mistake early on in joining the band, and that it was run like a very slick business, which she wasn't expecting.

Do you really think that Keren & Sara's output post-1991 is better than what they did together with Jacquie on 'Pop Life'? Sure, that wasn't all down to Jacquie's departure, but there's a very noticeable decline in quality (both vocally and musically) when Bananarama became a duo. I like much of 'Ultra Violet', but the vocals are so weak.

I thought you liked 'Love, Truth & Honesty'? That's Jacquie-era Bananarama.

If you ask anyone which decade they associate Collette's music with, very few people would say the 90s. 'Ring My Bell' tried to sound (musically) like Yazz's 'The Only Way Is Up', and that was '88.

Re: rage goes retro '3' - FULL 'COUNTDOWN' ARCHIVAL INFORMATION ON EACH EPISODE - Sat 19th Jan,

The Bananarama girls should have replaced Siobhan with her sister Maire and made a cover version of "Come On Eileen"

Pop Life is great because of Youth producing the record and if you listen closely, Jacquie is turned right down in the mix and you hear Keren the most followed by Sara on that record. It’s quite brilliant, I have met Bananarama many a time and Sara’s fabulous comment said to us was Jacquie was not very popula which as perfection. She was simply a filler for the group which Keren and Sara only didn’t want in the band, the end.

As much as l like Collette, her sound was basically imitation the UK Acid House scene which was a reeshing scene of the late 80s, yes .... But it was a great underground scene and then some jumped on the scene and made it more commercial. As for pop bands of 1988 and 1989, I was a far cry and big shift from the dazzling ERly and mid 80s with very little glamor and much less exciting technology or analogue synths.

Even Stock Aitken Waterman have said their most creative period was their earl days and have said Kylie and Jason were the best and worse things that happened to them.

The days of class like Princess, O’chi Brown, Brilliant and Dead or Alive, Michael Prince, Agents Aren’t Aeroplanes etc, that was and still is 80s GOLD.

Even though Bananarama are my fav girl band, the first he’s albums will always be their best for me. Their early work with SAW like More Than Physical and Veus was great but he Wow period was not and is not so Wow for me minus Some Girls and Once In A Lifetime.

I loathe I Want You Back, Help and Nathan Jones which were all singles with Jacquie, even though Siobhan sang on the original Nathan Jones and I Want You Back. I do like Love Truth & And Honesty but it hardly compares to the 1982 to 1986 era and again, Jaquie looks horrific as did Sara’s short bleached hair, that is not my Nana era. They have since been brilliant since Exotica as a duo xxxx

Pop Life is great because of Youth producing the record and if you listen closely, Jacquie is turned right down in the mix and you hear Kieren the most on that record. It’s quite brilliant, I have met Bananarama many a time and Sara’s fabulous comment said to us was Jacquie was not very popula which as perfection. She was simply a filler for the group which Keren and Sara only didn’t want in the band, the end.
Sara's just Sour-a, really.

I doubt Jacquie's mic was turned way down; she was technically a better singer than the other two, and e.g. did all of the ad libs at the end of 'Long Train Running' (yes, that's her). Keren has (or once had) a decent voice, and was probably the 'best' singer in the Siobhan-era. Siobhan brought some vocal depth to the group, and creativity/songwriting skills. I read someone's comment recently that Pete Waterman suggested Jacquie as Siobhan's replacement, because he knew she could sing and that the other girls needed someone else to boost their vocals, as without a third member it's just too bare.

Acid house might have been largely underground in Australia during the late 80s, but it wasn't underground in the UK, where there were many acid top 10 hits.

Siobhan is my fav Nana and did bring depth o the group, absolutely. Which is why the first three albums will always be my favourite. If you want to talk about a lack of depth, Stock Aiken Waterman gave them that.

Bananarama have been touring as a duo without Jacquie for a long time and fill venues so I doubt they really need her. I would have however loved Siobhan to stay longer and would have loved her to do another album with hem, but not meant to be.

As far as Long Train Running, is no a fav. I love What Colour R The Skies Where U Live and Is Your Love Strong Enough which you. Ant hear Jacquie much.

This thread is now outside the Countdown theme so l shall close it soon,

Tania Lacy is very unfunny agreed!
I haven\'t watched any of last night\'s Factory episode yet, so don\'t know what her segment was like on this, but I have found some of her other segments shown during retro month on The Factory or Countdown Revolution amusing. Yes, she can be abrasive and mocking of people she interviews, but sometimes she\'s funny.
Sometimes. The main skit was her being bored and finding ways to alleviate said boredom. I liked Daddo much more as a host compared to Mark Little on Countdown Revolution.

I think Alex Papps had left the factory when this episode was originally aired.

Papps was in H&A, and the Factory was taped in Melbourne.

I didn't mind Tania Lacey, some of her stuff was rubbish though. She was a dancer in that Kylie Minogue Locomotion clip too.

Little was a moron, too old for the countdown Revo crowd back then. Motley Crue thought he was a joke when they appeared on the show in early 1990.

Re: rage goes retro '3' - FULL 'COUNTDOWN' ARCHIVAL INFORMATION ON EACH EPISODE - Sat 19th Jan,

Acid house was big. Adamski KLF Shamen & S-Express all had huge chart success in the UK. S-Express were big here too. I had the theme from S-Express and Superfly Guy.

Oh, how could I forget 'Theme From S-Express'. That did well on the charts here too.
