Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Thanks HEAPS Jason and all! Wonderful! :) Now if they would only fix the Rage app for the exact times...haha..

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

The Saturday morning Countdown will presumably be repeated on ABC ME Sunday night (Monday morning), from around 1:30am.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

BRILLIANT!

A repeat of my requested episode, WOAH-HOOOOOOO!

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

I must say, I don't like when artists are interviewed in the middle of a music video (unless it is a common one) on Countdown. I don't have a copy of that Freddie Mercury video, but suspect he will be interviewed in the middle of it.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

And the 2 Rock Arena's are not too bad ...

Woo Hoo! They are playing my #2 Rock Arena request, 4 Dec 1984. Lots of great clips on that one! So that's 3 requests out of 5 now

I didn't request the August 1st 1987 Rock Arena though. And none of my Countdowns have got up so far

But no complaints and one more week to go!

And I've noticed there's been very little clip padding / repeating this year between shows, unlike previous years.

Agreed. Back in the eighties when I lived in a region where the ABC was virtually the only source of video clips, it used to pain me greatly when they interrupted a 'rare' one in the middle with an interview. 1985 seemed particularly prone to this, as I remember the only airings I ever saw of 'Boy In The Box' by Corey Hart and "Say i'm Your Number One' by Princess both had interviews inserted.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

I asked for some (non-specific) Countdown Revolutions and The Factory. Doesn't look like that's going to happen.

They could fit 4 Countdown Revolutions or a 1989 episode (when it was only 2 hours) of The Factory between 5-7am Sunday, instead of repeating the Vault segment from Saturday morning and new release videos.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Looks like an excellent night! A nice combo of Countdown's and Rock Arena's. The 1984 Rock Arena looks fantastic especially the Smiths and XTC videos
A couple of Hit Scenes and a sprinkling of Flashez inserts would have made it perfect.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

The Rock Arena's could be worse this weekend, anything is better than that horrific Rock Arena from 1988 last weekend. Sandie Shaw with The Smiths performing Hand In Glove is a highlight in the 1984 Rock Arena and the 1984 Rock Arena but overall the 1984 Rock Arena is boring, The Smiths and XTC videos are not RARE, rage have played them many a times and The Smiths vid's and performances are available on The Smiths DVD. The Smiths certainly don't need playing in January, rage play them frequently! I wanted this episode awhile ago for the SOS Band Just The Way You Like It video but rage have since played the video quite a few times now so this episode now means very little to me ....

At Clip Magnet ...
The 1987 Rock Arena looks far more interesting, both Westworld videos are FAB and I don't know the band Immaculate Fools and Mighty Lemon Drops, so will see what they are like. At least the 1987 episode has some rarities in there

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

At Brad, I love when interviews are placed over the videos on Countdowns. They did that from 1984 on wards. I reason why I think it was good Countdown did this is because Countdown had less studio performances from 1985 on wards in particular and were more wall to wall video clips episodes, so the interviews made it more exclusively COUNTDOWN. Also, you have to remember Countdown was just a one hour show and they had to place Molly's efforts of traveling overseas and interviewing all these people somewhere.

Eventually, The Meldrum Tapes started and full interviews were shown.

Regarding Freddie Murcury with I Was Born To Love You, it was played in full on Countdown with no interview on the 1985 episode with Molly and Freddie in Sydney which rage have now played this episode twice ...

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Clip Magnet, you have been very looked after this January, so be thankful.

I am finally getting my first request this weekend with the 1982 Countdown episode, interesting it's being played in the morning. Thank goodness rage are playing one of my requests, I hope nest weekend I get at least a further 2 Countdown's I asked for as the episodes I asked for are simply STUNNING with rarities and interesting studio performances

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Jason 'The Moderator"
The Smiths certainly don't need playing in January, rage play them frequently!

This is the problem. Rage seem to love digging out their favourite acts who have 'indie' cred during retro month - Nick Cave, The Reels (not sure they have indie cred, but rage seem to love them), and similar. I don't mind The Smiths, but yes, there doesn't seem to be that much rare footage on that episode. I think it would be better if they showed random Rock Arena episodes.

Someone I know has been requesting a Rock Arena episode with rare XTC videos for years, but I don't think it's this one, as those track titles were familiar to me, and it's only 2 videos of theirs.

Rage seem to be starting each retro episode this year with a 1980 or 1981 Countdown. I know you'll disagree Jason, but I wish they'd vary it up more, like staring with a mid 80s episode instead.

Clip Magnet, you have been very looked after this January, so be thankful.

Absolutely, and I'm extremely grateful, no disputing that at all. After many years of never getting any requests up, I've absolutely struck gold last year and this year.

rage can't possibly keep everyone happy, which is why I never complain about what episodes they play during retro month. If there's a whole night of stuff that doesn't interest me at all, I'm fine with that, because there's someone else out there for whom it's the best retro night ever. And I don't begrudge them that one bit.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Yep Nathan, I much prefer the Early 80s Countdown's as it's the most innovative time for music. And it's the best time for Countdown, mid 80s Countdown got terribly back to back videos and lost it's Countdown charm by 1985.

And at Clip Magnet, I am not going to be Mr holy and say I don't care what rage play in January as I wait all year for it. If rage were to play a whole night of GTK and Recovery I wouldn't be happy for those who enjoy it, i would be annoyed

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

You're correct Nathan, it isn't the exact episode, but they are playing "All You Pretty Girls" which is arguably one of the rarest XTC videos, and has never been shown on rage before. I'm pretty pleased because basically this is second on the list of episodes i wanted.

I feel like they (rage) did hear my request to some degree, as the episode I've been asking for is from Oct 84, so its getting closer, and this does at least feature XTC. I see this as likely an attempt to show the requested ep, but with poor attention to detail!

(staffer types R.A. 1984 XTC into search engine, picks first result) 😁

I'm the same - we all like different eras/shows so a mix of eras/shows is to me the way to go.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Well January's in the 90s was only Countdown and they have played other shows in between but Countdown is the most popular and the most wanted and this shows as this January it has been primarily Countdown.

And as this is a Countdown Forum I can say that I would love January to be non stop Countdown

Oh, 1980-1983 Countdown episodes definitely have more of a 'vibe' about them than later years; I wasn't complaining about the episodes per se, just saying I wish they'd vary the format a bit more.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

The Feb 28 1982 show just shown was absolutely brilliant. Great selection of songs, Elton was good, as pf course was the quiet stone Bill Wyman. However Cliff just stole the show, he is just brilliant in so many ways. Humble, professional and an amazing singer. I loved his response to Molly when he was asked about his Christian beliefs. Cliff spoke so freely about his Christianity and love for God and this is something that normally wouldn't be discussed onn ABC TV. So kudos to Molly for asking the question. Certainly Daddy's Home is far from his best, that would have to go to Dreaming, Wired for Sound, We don't talk anymore & The Only Way Out - oh and then there's the excellent 1987 LP "Always Guaranteed".. Bill Wyman's Come Back Suzanne is so funny - the lyrics and the video. I love the drum work in that song, which sounds like the legendary Charlie Watts, but infact is not.

Thanks Jase for requesting that show - awesome!!

It would have been programming genius if they'd saved this episode for a Saturday night, and followed up with the episode of The Factory that Mandy Smith appears on , going by this description on the tara archive:

Hi Leigh - Long time no speak

I specifically requested the episode they are playing, not just a "Rock Arena with XTC please". XTC featured in the 18 October 1986 episode with 6 clips: All You Pretty Girls, Are You Receiving Me, Ball And Chain, Senses Working Overtime, This Is Pop and Towers Of London. But I didn't request that episode because those last 5 clips are all available on their "Look Look" long-form video which I have.

The episode they are playing has "All You Pretty Girls" and "Wonderland" neither of which are commercially available (although rage did eventually play Wonderland last year). XTC also featured in the 29 Nov 1983 episode, which has the rare clip "Heatwave". I don't think rage has ever played that episode, I might request it next year.

The other reason I wanted this episode is for the Goanna and Supertramp clips. It ticked a lot of boxes for me and so I'm naturally thrilled it got up

What Oct 84 episode are you after? rage played 9th Oct 1984 episode in 2005 (yes quite some time ago) and the 23rd Oct 1984 episode (a fantastic one) in 2014. So the only episode left I can see is 30th Oct 1984 (Genesis, Paul Young and U2) although TARA has not catalogued every RA episode, or maybe other October episodes are lost.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

I wish the full clip for 'Gigolo' by Colleen Hewett existed somewhere, it looks fabulous!

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Speaking of XTC I loved the video of them performing "Generals & Majors" on last years opening Countdown.

Hi CM, Oct. 86 is the date i meant to say. I posted that reference on Facebook without checking it was right. In previous years I've sent them full episode details hoping it would get shown, but along the way, its air date slipped my mind. Anyway, its pleasing to see they did finally get that out of the vault after our requests. There was a third feature episode incl. XtC and New Order which has the At The Manor film which I've not seen played on rage yet.

XTC also featured in the 29 Nov 1983 episode, which has the rare clip "Heatwave". I don't think rage has ever played that episode, I might request it next year.

Definitely interested in this one too!

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

I'm with you Nathan, more CD Revolutions please ABC.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

There's a reason why Countdown Revolution only lasted for 1 year, because it was a poor imitation of the grandness and golden era of Countdown.

I was in the studio a few times for Countdown Revolution and it really wasn't that thrilling in comparison of what Countdown would have been in the Early 80s.

And when Mark Little and Tania Lacey took over, it destroyed the whole program. They were the worst hosts ever, thinking they were comedic and funny yet they were just ridiculous.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Mark Little is painfully unfunny

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Yes, he was awful.

I don't care about the hosts though, it's more because I watched it first time around, and they aired some rare videos every now and then. Plus the late 80s/early 90s (though I asked for 1989 episodes, which were generally better) period gets totally overlooked most retro months. It's like there's nothing in between Countdown and Recovery.

A really good and underrated period for pop music - a lot of great dance music like S-Express Guru Josh Technotronic Deee-Lite New Order et al

I agree it was a great age for dance music (and a coming-of-age era for hip hop as well)
Countdown Revolution was a pretty cringeworthy show though.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

Hi Everyone,

Long time viewer, first time contributor. I look forward to recording Countdown every January but unfortunately I missed last night's 3 episodes. (One of my kids accidently turned my DVD recorder off as I was asleep). Is there any way of obtaining copies of these episodes in any way? I usually convert them to DVD discs so that I have a hard copy. I would be happy to pay or reimburse for these.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

It still had it's place as the music from '89 to '90 was brilliant. Completley differesnt than the early 80's music which I love the most - but still great. And Jason, for the record, Countdown Revolution lasted over 18 months. Just Sayin'...

Re: FULL ARCHIVAL DETAILS for 'rage goes retro' 3 .Morning & Night episodes! Saturday 21st January

A whole 6 months extra Countdown Revolution lasted, so a year and a whole half as opposed to Countdown lasting 13 years

Not arguing over the fact that CD is obviously far superior to CDR. And of course, without CD there would be no CDR. But, as I said, it still has it's place in the hearts of most of us that were in high school at the time & loving the music & remembering those times with fond memories.

I want to find out does the music videos of Broderick Smith'S Big Combo's Faded Roses, WARD 13's See Venice And Die, Boys' Hurt Me Babe, Mi-Sex's Falling In And Out and Darryl Cotton's My Little Red Book were official or Countdown-produced while being shown on episode 286 and also, does the music video of Colleen Hewett's Gigolo was official or Countdown-produced and what's the same music video was about?

Ward 13 wasn't a music video, but was a snippet of their Countdown performance of the song (which was shown earlier this month in full), I believe.

Darryl Cotton looked like it could have been just a Countdown performance/'video' made by them.

Colleen Hewett looked like it was a music video, as it had an elaborate scene change, which wouldn't have really been possible if it was a Countdown performance. But it was only a snippet of the video shown, during a Chartbusters segment. I'll upload it to YouTube, as it looks like no-one else has yet.

Yay! I'm surprised i have never heard this song before esp. after hearing Gavin say it is No.27 nationally. I wonder what it's highest position was nationally? Mr Purser has the song uploaded on YouTube from a 45. The sound is great, as all his 45's are. I have played it many a times since the Countdown airing. Thanks Jason for requesting this episode. One of a hanful of gems from retro month 2017!

'Gigolo' actually peaked at #28 nationally. Countdown were then using their own chart (based on what, I don't know); hence the occasional tied positions in the top 10 you never see on the Kent/ARIA charts. They didn't start using the Kent Music Report chart (then licensed by ARIA) until July 1983:

Interesting - wonder how close Countdown's top 10's were to the kent top 10's? Whenever I think of how a song did - for instance Girls On Film - I always think of the Countdown top 10. #9 IIRC. Also I wonder how many Countdown #1's weren't #1's?

'Girls On Film' peaked at #11 on the Kent Music Report Chart.

'Babooshka' is one Countdown #1 that wasn't a Kent Report #1 (it peaked at #2).

Gary, see Gavin's chart beats, where he lists the No.2's of the 80s. Brass In Pocket is another one.
