Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

Thanks Jason, I love it when the rundown of each episode is put in the one post. You know, I always check this forum first during January's before looking at the rage site. BTW - you meant 40th Anniversary. I wish it was the 30th!

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

That's a pretty good way to start retro season.

As with Jason, I had been asking for the 1985 Koo De Tah episode for the last 4-5 years so really happy to see that one air. There are some great clips on this episode with Do Re Mi's Warnings Moving Clockwise one of my favourite songs for that year. I remember watching this episode at the time like it was yesterday, one of the years' best.

Both the 1980 and 1984 shows are amongst the few of those years that I have not seen.

The 1982 episode exists in timecoded format but with tape damage on the original transfer so it will be good to get a quality and clean copy of that as well.

Good to also see the Steve Kilby episode from 1981 get an airing as Christina had asked for it.

Very happy with all of them actually except the repeat which was unfortunate and unnecessary for 80's episodes but it is shown in the 5-6am slot which I wasn't anticipating being reserved for retro.

After this we still have four more weeks and there is no sign of any sport interfering yet.

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

Re the sport stuff, it seems we'd have to keep an eye on January 17th and 31st - January 17th is a delayed Asian Cup game from 9.00pm, and a live final on the 31st. The delayed one should finish in time for Rage's planned broadcast time (when that is I don't know) and not sure for the 31st.

Anyway, something to consider..

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

An excellent night! I haven't thought about The Phantom Rap in ages - had the 12" with the send of Bob Hawke on the flip side which I thought was hilarious at the time.

Would love to see some more Flashez segments. There are hundreds of them in the vaults! We got dozens of them for a few years but in recent seasons almost nothing. If we don't get any this year I'm going to make sure that I put in a request(or 10!) for next year.

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

Steve Kilbey looked a little uncomfortable hosting.

And what was going on with that dutch group?! Very weird...

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

Did anyone else notice the '81 episode picture was ****e at times? There was a bit of damage there at the start of the Top 10 and half of the episode there was the tape end showing a bit on the right hand side of the screen. I think it was showing a bit in the 1980 episode too.

On a music note, don't you think the lead singer of Pop Mechanix looked and danced just like the Fred Loneragan from Machinations? This '81 episode featured a lot of tracks from '1981 Rocks On'. Poor Steve, another one of those hosts that just aren't natural at hosting...and Molly not liking 'Gotta Pull Myself Together'!

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

A very good batch of episodes for starters, and yes there was noticeable tape damage on a couple of the shows. Now they are in digital format hopefully no further deterioration will be noticeable.

The 1980, 81 and 82 shows bring back happy memories of seeing these episodes first time round. Very enjoyable to sit through it all again. Some of the anecdotes from books and stories written about Countdown come to the fore here, Mollys review of the Kampuchea album and the number of times he can say the word "album" in one sentence, not to mention his dislike of the Nolans!! And Steve Kilbeys hand actions in "Unguarded Moment".

The shows from the later years had lost a lot of what made Countdown so important, not that there was anything wrong with the music from the period but the whole presentation was geared to just wall-to-wall video clips. Nothing beats the period 1980 to 1982 though!!

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

That excerpt by The Horde (?) during Humdrum in the 1981 episode was really strange! I've tried to find more information about it but haven't found anything, does anyone have any more info on it?

I think that's the dutch group I referred to in an earlier post. Very strange indeed!

What I found interesting was the repeated 1986 episode, which aired in Jan 2009, must have been re-encoded digitally for this broadcast, as it has the newer (since early 2012) larger letters/less sharp resolution... which suggests to me that rage *don't* keep episodes of Countdown they've repeated in digital storage - i.e. that they dig out the original source tapes when they air them, which suggests that the tapes are subject to further degradation.

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

****, my recording cutoff during the top10 of the 1986 episode.

Thankfully i recorded this to DVD back in 2009 also.

Agree with the 1980-82 shows being the best to watch back retrospectively but I was quite happy with everything Countdown did from 1974 to 1986 as that just takes me back to that era - particularly for the latter years from the early 80's onwards that I saw originally.

Countdown lost me in 1987 when they introduced the Pirate TV theme and I actually stopped watching it altogether, even though the music was still good, the format was shocking.

Sir and with the greatest respect,

For your future records it was The Jam "Going Underground" and not JAN 'GOING UNDERGROUND'.

Yours Sincerely and apologetically,
RJ TAYLER

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

At RJ,

I copy and paste the archival content from the archives I bought from the ABC. The person working for the ABC at the time typed out all the details, not me

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

Ok, so the one at fault is closer to the source than I first thought; perhaps they should go back and check the eggs to see if they are correctly labeled now?

Re: rage goes retro 1 : FULL COUNTDOWN EPISODE DETAILS!

Guru Bob

Good to also see the Steve Kilby episode from 1981 get an airing as Christina had asked for it.

Yeah Bob, good stuff.
I remember Jimbo and I requested this SK ep year after year on the old Rage messageboard.
Better late than never I guess.

Agree with Gary and Michael that poor old Steve looked more than a little ill at ease and was so nervous. He looked mighty relieved when the show was finally over.
Yes, Steve's hand actions in Unguarded Moment were priceless, especially tracing a little tear down his face.
He was looking very pretty too in all that eyeliner and mascara but shocking haircut.

Also agree with other comments here that the early 80s Countdown eps were by far the best. Anything after 1984 I find less interesting.
I also love all the late 70s ones.
Looking forward to the rest of Rage retro during Jan.
