Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Screen Australia and Channel 7 were planning to make a television mini-series about one of Australian rock bands, INXS and going to screen it in late this year or next year.
The question is, who will play as Michael Hutchence and why?

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

I would say an unknown actor with a distinctly sounding voice matching Michael's. It would probably give the mini-series more credibility and it will be their big break!

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

The Untold Story Of INXS mini-series will premiered on Seven in February, March, April or May this year.
Keep an eye on it.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Ads for this (with no specific mention of dates) have been airing in Vic for the last few months.

The 'Kylie' actress they've got is a bit of a joke as it looks (in the preview anyway) more like she did from mid 1990 onwards, if not later; not late '89 when she was dating 'Hutch'.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

If I remember from previous mags of the time, I saw her stepping out with Michael in cropped short hair, must have been early 1990. Well def. around the same time Max Q came onto the scene.

That wig & the noughts and crosses dress was definitely in the 3rd quarter of 1989, as I remember discussing it at primary school with a classmate in the year above me (grade 6 in a 5/6 composite grade) who was an INXS fan.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Yeah, I had a feeling it was a wig!

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

INXS: Never Tear Us Apart will premiering on Seven at 8.30pm next week and continues the week after.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Thanks for that, Nicholas.
Look forward to watching.

Lookswise, have always thought the actor, Aidan Turner,(of Being Human/The Hobbit fame), would have been perfect to play Michael Hutchence.

The resemblance is uncanny here.

Being Irish, dunno if he would be able to fully master the Aussie accent though.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Luke Arnold is playing as Michael, he's an Australian to play as this iconic Australian rock star with an Australian accent.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Yeah, will be interesting to see how he goes in the role.
He doesn't really look like Michael all that much but hopefully he can do Michael justice in other ways.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Really enjoyed Part 1 and loved the Countdown bits. Call me pedantic, but a couple of things that I want to point out:

Michael seemed to have the same hairdo from 1979 up to the Kick period.

Filming of the video "The One Thing" I got the impression that they were still on the Deluxe label and they were talking about signing them up to a major label. I thought for the release of "Shabooh Shoobah" they were already on the WEA label?

The Farris Bros. celebrating Xmas at home (Dec'84) and one of the brothers telling Andrew to cheer up "Hey, we've got a No.1 record" and he goes "yeah in France". So what about "Original Sin" going to No.1 in Oz in January '84?

The footage of INXS winning the awards was from 1984 Countdown Awards, held in May 1985? Was this when Michael met Kylie as they showed? Correct me if I'm wrong, but she would have still been an unknown and would be filming The Henderson Kids.

Michael saying he liked Locomotion to Kylie, well that was way too early and still 1985 or possibly 1986.

When was that interview that Michael did with Paula Yates? Was it before or after Kick? Def. was before in what we saw last night.

Loved the excerpt from a 1989 US Music Awards show.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Really enjoyed it as well.
Yes, there were a few inaccuracies but overall found it surprisingly good and the acting wasn't bad either.

Yes, omitting that 'Original Sin' went to #1 here (their only #1 single in Oz) was strange.

Even more puzzling - on wikipedia (yes, I know it isn't always accurate), 'Original Sin' is listed as peaking at #2 in France.

I checked on a French chart website I know of, but it seems to only go back to November 1984 (after 'Original Sin'). Oddly, they didn't have another single bother the French charts until 'Need You Tonight'.

As for the chronology of meeting Kylie & Locomotion, yes I think that was a bit off. The scene with '1987' over the screen happened shortly after that, implying that 'Locomotion' was out in 1986, which it wasn't.

I liked the first part of this too. It was better than I was expecting, which wasn't much.

I wonder if Max Q will be covered in the second instalment

One other thing about this show - people seem to generally assume that 'Never Tear Us Apart' was their biggest hit. It didn't even crack the top 10 here(#14 was its peak)! Though it was a big radio hit, and I guess was the 4th single off a nearly a year-old album... which it helped to propel to the top of the charts (well, only on the Australian Music Report chart... It peaked at #2 on ARIA).

Here's their UK & US chart history for anyone interested (warning: this is a looooong post!)

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Michael

Filming of the video "The One Thing" I got the impression that they were still on the Deluxe label and they were talking about signing them up to a major label. I thought for the release of "Shabooh Shoobah" they were already on the WEA label?

Reading Wikipedia, "The One Thing" was done under the Deluxe label. Then they scored a contract with WEA in July '82 for the album release.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Correct! They made a blue there. It was the infact the 1987 Countdown Awards that Michael first had some interest in Kylie. Locomotion was released in 1987 & she definitley wasn't in neighbours in 1985, as it didn't exist then! I didn't know until now how much influence Chris Murphy had on the bands success after that tool head at Atlantic told him that "Kick" was not going to work & Chris just turned his back on him made in happen - and thank goodness he did!

Neighbours did exist in 1985 but the Awards were all wrong with the Kylie meeting. What You need won Awards in 1986 and not 1987 and Kylie was ont he 1987 Awards. And the hair was all wrong on Michael from 1979 -1983, Michale had shorter hair and not The Swing hair but in this special he had The Swing hair in 1979 and early 80s, not correct. At least in The One Thing they got the hair right as it suddenly shrunk (hahaha)

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

I seem to remember Kylie, Jason & Peter O'Brien presenting Pseudo Echo with best group at the 1987 awards. Or i could just be going senile

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

The only person/people that have gone senile are the ones that awarded Pseudo Echo best group for 1986, in lieu of INXS

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

It was just before Kick came out. Had it been after it may well have been different.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Watching Part 1 again, I think that was the 1987 Countdown Awards. Looking at the category winners in Smash Hits Magazine, INXS did win an award that night for 'Best Group Performance In A Video' which I think was for 'Kiss The Dirt' (without watching the awards again). I think this part should have been shown closer to the end of Part 1.

Yes, the hair def. was wrong from 1979-1983.

Michael sang 'To Look At You' very early in the piece (ie 1980). Did they write this song back then and it took 2 years to surface on an album?

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Absolutely loved Part 2 (better than Part 1).

I watched the '84 Countdown Video and Music Awards again last night (broadcast 19th May, 1985) and I think it is probably the best Countdown Awards show of all the years. Main reason was to see more of INXS.

Nathan, during the broadcast, Gavin announced that 'Original Sin' went to No.1 in France and Argentina.

and finally, INXS 'The Very Best' is No.1 on the Oz charts! and 'Kick' at No.7 and a few more albums hovering in the Top 50.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Watched the '85 Countdown Awards last night (broadcast 20/4/86) and this was the awards that was shown in the mini series. The award was given to INXS for Most Popular Australian Group. The announcers were the lead singer from Mr. Mister and Molly as we briefly saw in the excerpt...and Michael meeting Kylie was not on this night and still 15 months away. Cheers.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

The INXS special on 'Sunday Night' was very well put together.

Also, anyone know where I can purchase INXS 12" mixes online? There is nothing on itunes.

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

Here's the latest news about INXS in movies and television which it come from The Music magazine:
We are now definitely salivating for Richard Lowenstein's Michael biopic which has received from Screen Australia and is expected to start shooting at the tail end of 2014.
Do you think the cast members of INXS: Never Tear Us Apart includes Luke Arnold, Damon Herrinan, Luke Sheridan and Samantha Jade will play as the characters again in Michael biopic movie just like the mini-series and they're say, 'Hey, let do it again!'?

Re: Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story Of INXS TV mini-series

I doubt it, they will most probably go down a different path with new faces. Perhaps keeping the dude that played Michael though.

I read in the Melbourne or Sydney paper last week that Kylie highly praised the telemovie and says her parts in it were pretty spot on and Samantha Jade did a great job playing her. She said she was surprised that they gave the part to her, because usually drag queens end up playing her. and in admiration that Australia is embracing INXS and discovering their music again.
