Re: some old ARIA chart scans

LOL, ARIA made a boo-boo on this one, having to correct HP (highest position) to TI (times in, or weeks in):

Re: some old ARIA chart scans

Yes, thanks. I will print them out and add them to my collection.

Re: some old ARIA chart scans

Was thinking - for each Countdown episode rage play this month, or the next 2 weekends, we post an image of the Aria Top 50 sheet for that week? I guess any episodes after July '83 when the ARIA charts began.

Good idea! I'll have to sort through my early early ARIA charts to see if I have them for that week.

Re: some old ARIA chart scans

Thanks for those Nathan

Those charts are so much more inspiring than anything seen today.

I like how the automatic censor didn't like W O P but had no trouble with cumma cumma wang dang, not that any of it means anything.

Guru Bob

I like how the automatic censor didn't like W O P but had no trouble with cumma cumma wang dang, not that any of it means anything.

I didn't spot that until now, but how funny.

Re: some old ARIA chart scans

Thanks Nathan. Wish I could contribute, but my ARIA charts don't start until mid May '87. Anyway, good to get hold of some more charts!

BTW - I see those charts are by 'week commencing'. Wasn't there a period where they did 'week ending'?

Re: some old ARIA chart scans

> BTW - I see those charts are by 'week commencing'. Wasn't there a period
> where they did 'week ending'?

From what I can gather, the ARIA chart (including the years it was licensed from David Kent) was week ending on the published charts up until some time in 1998 (from memory). However, in David Kent's 1970-1992 chart book, the entry dates are listed as week commencing. I suppose it makes sense - even though the printed charts were dated 'week ending' prior to late 1998, they were always (as far as I'm aware) actually printed on the Monday of the week.

To confuse matters even more, the chart actually covers sales from the week before it was published (week commencing). So, for example, the 10th November 1986 chart actually covers sales between 3rd November and 9th November 1986 inclusive. However, the printed chart for that week would have been dated week ending 16th November 1986!

Re: some old ARIA chart scans

Hmmm maybe Countdown got the chart a day early? I was going to post the Dec 3rd 1984 chart for the Dec 9th 1984 Countdown episode, where 'Like a Virgin' had moved up to #1, but it corresponds with the Dec 10th 1984 chart:

Re: some old ARIA chart scans

Nathan: Hmmm maybe Countdown got the chart a day early? I was going to post the Dec 3rd 1984 chart for the Dec 9th 1984 Countdown episode, where 'Like a Virgin' had moved up to #1, but it corresponds with the Dec 10th 1984.

Michael: Countdown must have got the chart 3 days early as they were usually recorded 2 days prior to airing on Sunday. . This was why I contacted Aria last year saying that their Top 10 Singles & Albums chart in 'this week in aria chart history' doesn't correspond with the Countdown Top 10 of that week. As you said, it does correspond with the following weeks chart.

If Countdown was recorded that early, it must mean then that the Kent Report charts (which ARIA licensed) are dated a whole week AFTER they were published! So, e.g. the printed chart with the date listed week ending 23rd November 1986 (the '17th November 1986 chart' airing on Countdown episode 16th November 1986) actually covered sales from the week 3-9 November 1986 inclusive.

I guess in the 80s, it would have taken a while to collate all of the sales reports from record stores (and back then there was no electronic point of sales data), so it would make sense then that the chart was published later in the week than the Monday following the week it covers.

Re: some old ARIA chart scans

Nathan, neither the 2nd May or 9th May charts above, matched the Top 10 8th May 1983 episode? The others were spot on though.

That's odd the 1983 one doesn't match! According to my database, the ARIA top 50 began for the week commencing 4th April 1983. Maybe Countdown hadn't synched with them still a month later? I don't know what other chart they would have used, though, as ARIA and the Australian Music (Kent) Report were one and the same at the time.

If memory serves me right, Countdown were still using their own charts until the end of June 1983. The first linked ARIA/Countdown chart was the July 3 1983 issue - that was also the first official Countdown chart that you could pick up in the record shops. Molly discusses this in one of the Humdrum segments in an episode from this period.

My earliest Countdown chart is July 17 1983 which was the 3rd week that it was issued.

Re: some old ARIA chart scans

Yes, I remember it was 29/5/83 episode hosted by Alex Smith - Moving Pictures. I remember there was no official Top 10 for that week. They did go with a Top 10 though, where I think the viewers voted for the Top 10. I remember Molly talking about the 2 charts combining in this Humdrum. I have the episode and I'm pretty sure it's mentioned in the archives playlist.

Which retro January did this episode air in, do you know? I have a vague memory of seeing Molly talking about the first 'Countdown' chart you could pick up in record stores.
