Quick question please. I have a 1926 Durant Star coupster and there is an oil pressure gauge. It does not register when running. I have disconnected the oil line from the pressure sensor port, started the engine and oil comes squirting out. Not excessively but come out. I've heard that the lubrication on these straight 4 cylinders is based on the splash system and that the oil gauge more than likely will not work. Just asking if this is true for this old car as it is with the 1926 Ford model A, or is the an oil pump somewhere? Thanks for the help.
This should answer the question, from our Aftermarkets on oil pump parts.
Model A Ford 1928 - 32 had a pump. Model T 1908 - 1927 oil is circulated inside the engine by a combination of gravity, splash, drip, and centrifugal force.

Thank you for the reply sir. Good information but I guess im trying to ask does the stock 26 star engine have an oil pump or is it lubricated solely with gravity, splash, and drip, and if it does have an oil pump where in the heck is it? :relaxed: Thanks again.
The info you received was totally wrong. The Continental engine has an oil pump driven at the rear of the camshaft and is mounted on the back of the engine. The oil is pumped, at about 30 pounds, through the hollow cam shaft, through passages to the cam bearings, down to the crank journals, and then to the rod bearings. The timing chain and gears are lubed from bypass oil from the relief valve located on the front of the camshaft.
I am thinking that you could be confused with our 4 cylinder Durant model A-22 ('22-'26) those engines have the dipper/splash with a grapevine distributation system with very low residual pressure from a low volume external gear pump...Oil pressure at guage is 3-5 lbs (if you are lucky)
That part page is out of Leaside 1938 catalogue. Here's the Durant US counterpart.
Can't find anything on Google search showing the W4A / W5A engines giving info or exploded view. Perhaps a DMACer can point Mark in right direction where to get his hands oily on his pump.

Thank you Bill. I truly appreciate all of you. This is a new project for me. I rescued this car from an idiot who wanted to chop it up and make a rat rod out of it. s again you guys are amazing....Mark
