Star hub caps

Just a general question … Was this cap an option on the 1922 Star ? Normal is the five pointed star and no name until Star came under Durant Motors. A new Star owner has them on his touring.

Re: Star hub caps

That was the last Star cap, it was part of the short lived 1928 Durant-Star.

Re: Star hub caps

Don / Rick .. That was my first thought perhaps the British Star. There is s site that gives info on the early hub caps but I just couldn't find it, I know I have seen this cap before. When you think of Star caps it's usually the plain star or the Durant crest on the star and name changed from Durant to Star.
So they put this on the M2 then, Jan 1 1928 to March 31 1928 with 5000 built Eliz and 1000 at Leaside.
They are on an early 1922 Star C touring that also has an accessory spot light attached to it. That bulb unscrews and has the cord inside.

Have a look on eBay 173898318600. Billy must have made two different caps. Even the lettering is different.

Star PA Model M, R and M-2 1928

• DESCRIPTION: Pressed aluminum threaded hubcap for a Star automobile built in Elizabeth, New Jersey between the years of 1922 thru 1928 by Durant Motors Inc. This cap is a bit hard to find and has Star name in block letters. My notes show this cap being used on Star models M, R, and M-2 on 1928 models.
• SIZE: The cap has an outside diameter of just over 2 13/16” and is 1 5/8” high with 2 ¼”-16 threads.
-------------------------------------------------
What the above means are vehicles with model year not production year. Model year is Aug 1st of one year to July 31 of next and VIN's are model year not production. This stopped with the 1930's and later vehicles and model year was only when a model was upgraded. Hence 1930 614 as example is Jan 4 1930 to Dec 31 1930, 1931 614 is Jan 1 1931 to Jan 31 1932 Can and Aug 31 Lansing, 1932 614 is Feb 1 1932 to end of model 1932. That's why the US 619 is only 1931 model year when plant died Aug 1931, there was no upgrade to the 619. The E Frontenac's, 407 / 618 Durant also have the Feb 1st 1932 as 1932 model year.

So Star M's Aug 1 1927 to Dec 31 1927 are model year 1928. M became the M2 Jan 1 1928 to March 31 1928 (when it became M2 Durant car to Sept 30 1928, truck Sept 4 1928) so also 1928 model year. R Aug 1 1927 to Dec 31 1927 are 1928 model year ( Jan 1 1928 the R became the 55 Durant).
