Running Boards

I'm looking at a 1927 Star Six 4 door on line. The gentleman that's selling the car sent me some pics of the car. A couple of the pics were chassis shots and I noticed that this car has wooden running boards. Durants are new to me, so please forgive my ignorance, but was this how they came new? I used to Model T's and Model A's with steel running boards. I really like the look of the Durant Star Cars. TIA!

Do You own a car built by Durant? Looking at a 27' Star Six 4 door

Re: Running Boards

Hi Steve;
The Star car was Durant's answer and competition for the Model T initially. Durant advertised that it was "Women friendly" as it has an electric starter and 3 speed manual shift. They sold a lot of them and it's a great car. Most of the Durant cars has wooden running boards covered in a rubber material on top. If you buy it, don't forget to join this club. It will be the best money spent as we have a great bank of knowledge among our members, and you will NEVER find a friendlier group of car enthusiasts. And besides you will then be able to call yourself a "Durantonian".

Re: Running Boards

Yes the Durant, Rugby, and Star came with rubber covered wooden running boards, as did the 1931 / 32 E Frontenac out of Leaside. A number of owners prefer to just leave the wood exposed and varnished. See photo section under Durant 1931 619 Charlie Spitz or 1929 66 Lance Hayes or under Rugby 1929 Rugby Bus. The 1932 614 and 618 Durant's out of Leaside were the last to use rubber covered wood. The 1932 633 Durant and 685 Frontenac has rubber over steel since they used same body / fenders as the 1932 680 De Vaux.

Henry used steel only boards on T from 1908 - 27. Ford script length wise on the early ones, then across after. Believe R and S also used steel boards. 1904 B used wooden as indicated in Google search images, but A and C no boards. Model F wooden. Can't seem to make up his mind.
