Would someone please educate me on what the red fluid that is found on motor meters and gas gauges. In the process of restoring the gas gauge on my Flint. Is the fluid still available??
Hi Yates. From my experience with the sale and handling of maple syrup thermometers, red reading or blue for that matter was always alcohol. Silver reading was mercury. Since we were concerned with a thermometer breaking in a food processing application, we generally used alcohol thermometers and learned they are much more fickle than mercury. They tend to be prone to sticking at a high point and not dropping or getting an air gap in the red column. There are ways to solve that provided the glass tube is not cracked or broken. If tube is cracked or broken, it's time to move on.
Yates> You can try " www.classicandexotic.com". They sell King Seeley Fluid Gauge Components. They also sell the fluid. Haven't tried them myself but good luck.
