Dort Leftovers

I bought this old gem several years ago just to save it from scrap, and thought it would be perfect for my first prewar restoration. After learning more about Dorts, I discovered that I'll never find the parts needed to do anything with it, so I might as well find somebody that can use it. My problem is that I have no idea what to sell it for?? I came across this site in my searches, and thought maybe one of you could help me out. If its not worth much, I might as well take the engine out and use it for a creative project in the future. Anybody have any clue what it could be worth, or even which model car it is? I hate to see old cars go to waste

Re: Dort Leftovers

There doesn't seem to be a Dort club but there is a Gray Dort Club in Ontario. That has pics of Gray Dorts and info. They can probably tell you what you have.

Gray-Dort Motors was a Canadian automobile manufacturer in Chatham, Ontario, Canada, from 1915 to 1925.
In 1915, Robert Gray obtained the Canadian rights to manufacture the Dort Automobile from Flint automobile manufacturer J. Dallas Dort, of the Dort Motor Co., and that year Gray-Dort was formed.
In 1923, after several years of successful but stressful business, J. Dallas Dort decided he wanted to leave the automobile business, and Robert Gray could not dissuade him. A few months later, Dallas Dort died while playing golf.

The Dort was an automobile built by the Dort Motor Car Company of Flint, Michigan from 1915–1924. Dort used Lycoming built engines to power their vehicles.

Hey Norm;
What do you mean there isn't a Dort club. The DMAC covers Dort too! It's part of our family of cars in the club.

Re: Dort Leftovers

Oops Mike .. Since Dort is not one of Billy's empire of cars I forget it gets tucked into ours because of the Durant / Dort buggy's long before Durant Motors. Actually don't know why we do. Dallas cut any tie to Billy by 1915.

I was looking in search and hit the same comment that there is no Dort club in the US and knew Chatham Ont has a Gray Dort club. Same car mostly.

Robins Auto Wrecker had the cowl forward of a Gray Dort and also a 40 Durant, both made into sawmills. No one in our club was interested in the 40 but the Gray Dort was snapped up when I contacted the club in Chatham a few years back.

Dort Automobile

The Dort was an automobile built by the Dort Motor Car Company of Flint, Michigan from 1915–1924. Dort used Lycoming built engines to power their vehicles.

Dort Motor Car traced its history back to its founding as the Flint Road Cart Company in 1884 by William Crapo Durant and Josiah Dallas Dort, who sold wagons, built by local suppliers for $8 apiece. In 1900, the company, which by now was making 50,000 wagons, carts, and carriages annually, changed its name to Durant-Dort Carriage Company.

Dort was a Director and Vice President of Chevrolet in 1912; in 1913 Dort stepped down and by 1915 he and Durant cut their business ties.

Re: Dort Leftovers

Jon, Based on the engine number of my Dort #69528, I would say your car is probably the same year as mine,1920. Dort made several models, both open and closed and used the same chassis. Without a model number it would be hard to say which one was on your chassis.

Re: Dort Leftovers

Does anybody have a picture of a Dort Sedan? Any advertising material floating around among club members. Our Museum section on Dort is slim.

Re: Dort Leftovers

Probably your best chance to get a running vehicle is to build a "Ute", that is a small wood-constructed pickup truck. There are plenty of examples out there.
