Generally they used Maple. White Ash is also an excellent choice. Mainly depended which hard wood was available near the factory.

My car came from Elizabeth NJ and it originally had Ash in it. Down here in the South it's hard to get Ash so when I did my roof replacement I used Red Oak. You need a good hard wood.
