Hurricane Sandy

The news is filled with images of very severe damage caused by Hurricane Sandy.
Flooding, wind and fire is what TV here on the west coast is showing 24/7.

I hope our east coast members are safe and dry.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Ok, time for a roll call. I spoke with Gary K yesterday and he was all supplied up and getting ready to hunker down for the duration. How about you Charlie everything OK in the Jersey home front. Seems the coastal area of Jersey got hit bad and lots of flooding. Yates you OK up there in North Carolina. Others have to worry about an early snow too. Let's hear from you folks to know you are OK.

HI All......

Got an email from Charlie this morning. They are without power and water but all are OK. Has a lot of trees down in his yard.

Looks like Staten Island got hit very hard, haven't heard from Ed.

We've had a lot or rain and wind here in Western PA, lost power for a short period a couple times but the generator kicked in and we are OK.

All the East Coast is in our thoughts and prayers.......

Hello folks:

Lots of rain up here in Ontario. Some areas out of power, but the storm is lessening.
Hear that New York has been hit hard. The stock exchange has been shut down. You have our sympathies.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

We got hit hard. I have lived on the Jersey Shore for 60 years, and this is one of the top 3 storms that I have experienced.

As you all know the storm made a sharp left as it passed NJ, and since we are only 2 miles from the ocean, the 85 knot winds did a lot of damage. We needed to charge cell phones so Peg and I took a tour of the area as best as we could since many of the roads are closed, and there is a lot of damage, and I mean a lot of damage

For those of you that have been to our house you know what the neighborhood is like, well no ones house was hit by trees, BUT, we have lost as least 24 large trees in the back and one that is dangling in the front yard. 50% of our fence is gone because of the trees that fell, our neighbor to the right lost 14, and to the left about 12.

We have been without power since 4 pm EDT on Monday, and no water because of pumping issues with the town since 3 am today. Schools are closed, some until next week. In NYC the subways have water in the tunnels, as does the PATH train tunnels. Those of you that know my son and daughter they are OK, daughter has power back, son does not..

Oh, and Peg and I were suppose to be in Santa Fe, NM this week, our flights were cancelled Sunday morning for our Monday departure.

With limited power, I may not be able to post for awhile.

Thanks for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers, as we are praying for all of our Jersey friends and neighbors as well.

See you in San Diego.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Sorry Gord but we are still waiting any rain up in Ottawa and only got minor wind. If you saw the weather channel we got sunshine and 68 F temps today. Looked like rest of Ont got clouds, wind and rain. Not saying we want it and will probbaly hit us over night and rest of week.

Seems its worse Toronto way and up the Seaway as usual.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Dear Uncie .. we weren't worried about you, its the cars. So I am not the only who doesn't drink beer, either.

CBC has this morning on my NCF server ... Ottawa endures high winds with only minor damage. Though high winds hit the area overnight Monday into Tuesday morning as superstorm Sandy moved north, Ottawa escaped with very little damage.

Don't know about high winds, as trees still have a lot of their leaves which is what we want finished for another season. Sure filling yard waste bags at customers homes, for my bro's lawn and garden business. Seems odd light showers perhaps today, so the trick and treaters should be out for Halloween.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Hi All,
Doris and I are doing well. No Sandy problems here as we just recieved
wind and some rain. Great to hear our members escaped the wrath of such a terrible storm.
During Fran some years ago we lost power for 10 days and quite a few trees.
Sandy seems to have done considerably more damage than Fran.
Anyone heard from John Baraldi in MA??

Nice to hear from you folks that were in the path of sandy . Has anyone heard from Ed Vomero? I have been watching and waiting to see if he is okay. Think he lives in a real bad area Sure hope he is okay.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

Sorry I COULD NOT GET BACK TO YOU ALL SOONER.
Staten Island is still in a mess, Finally get power back today, but most of the Island is still dark. Recovery efforts still ongoing, most major roads still blocked. Cell phones were out due to cell tower going down. FEMA and the Red Cross did not get here till yesterday. We are gathering clothing and baby clothing to take to the shelters.
My cars are kept in the A flood zone, somehow, by a miracle, my street was the only one in the area that was not flooded. The Star survived. Gas is not available, I had my five gallon cans fulled so I will be mobile for a few more days.
Hope to see you all in San Diego

This morning I saw pictures on TV of Staten Island for the first time and WOW you were sure hit hard.

Glad you came out in relatively good shape and unharmed.

We’re thinking about you Ed.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

You don't realize how far spread Sandy has caused problems ,and how reliant we are on things until something like this happens. Talking to a clerk in a major grocery store chain, food produce is sitting on the tarmac in NY as planes can't land or take off, other food produce is sitting on ships in the harbour. Will be a long time before any of that is solved, getting it to Canada or out to US.

Citizen carried a pic of a roller coaster, on the front page, out in the ocean put there by Sandy. So much hardship on folks in the center of it all.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

an update from the Jersey Shore:

Peg and I are still without power since Monday at 4 pm, we do have water service back, but we are on sewer restrictions because the pumps are not operational at the sewer plant.

We hired a 'storm chasing' tree removal company on Wednesday evening, they parked their equipment in the driveway on Thursday, and spend 11 hours on Friday and another 3 this morning taking down more than 30 trees that were uprooted. Our back yard looks like a war zone, and we have lots of oak for anyones fire place stacked at the street. Our entire street is wood, limbs and leaves, which is several trailer loads full.

Because we have no power, we are losing food, so peg fixed the tree crew (12 men) beef stew, grilled chicken, rice and lots more yesterday, and they are coming back today for lunch again because we would just be throwing out the food when it thawed.

We have NO damage to the house, but with no heat it is cold inside. With that said we are surviving. The diesel trucks have AC power so we can charge our phones and computers, but now we are on gas rationing and the lines are 1-2 hours long.

The Jersey Shore has no boardwalks, they are gone from Long Branch south to Seaside, Belmar is flooded and the pumps from Katrina are there pumping water out.

As the story continues we will try to keep you posted.

Oh and Halloween was our 42nd anniversary, we had a candlelight dinner!

Re: Hurricane Sandy

I got to the Jersey Shore in a town called Belmar this morning to assess the damage to a friends house that is 1000 feet from the ocean. He had water in his living room 3 feet high, and his living room is 10 feet above mean high tide. He still has a crawl space full of water. The house is only 2 years old.

He had pieces of the Belmar boardwalk in his front yard, and the Belmar board walk is history, as are most of the boardwalks along the Jersey shore. I saw sand in the streets 3 feet deep, devastation like I have never seen.

we are on day six without power, we are trying to use up the food that we have, with no heat and no power, it has been like being on an 'indoor camping trip' for the last week, and my sources in the power company tell me not until tuesday, and he lives in my town, so you know he wants to get it on for him as well.

News at 11. stay tuned.

Charlie & Peggy:
Those of us who live inland don't realize the power of the ocean and high waves. We do respect and fear the high winds that rip off roofs and devistate the countryside.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you both. Here's hoping that tomorrow morning the power will be back on and once again you will be warm and comfy. It will take a longer time to reinstate your back yard with trees.
All the very best, and keep us posted.

Re: Hurricane Sandy

to all of our Durant friends that have posted here, sent email or called, thank you for your concerns and prayers.

Peg and I got power back about 1330 EST today, after 6 days and 21 hours. This morning the temperature in the bedroom was 53 degrees. The long term indoor camping experience is over. But we have a nor'easter looming on Wednesday.

It was nice to come home tonight to lights and heat.

again thanks
