Mining Equiment with Durant STAR engine

Never heard of Durant until I saw one of their engines at a museum yesterday in Tonopah, Nevada. Thought it might be of interest to some.

Re: Mining Equiment with Durant STAR engine

Yet another testament to the durability of the Continental engines.
Or, the mine operators were short on cash so they grabbed the nearest unwatched car and built their own winch,,,

Is that an original carburetor? I've never seen one.

Re: Mining Equiment with Durant STAR engine

Seeing the transmission, that is a Star M setup. The carb is from a Model A Ford. Very commonly found on Star engines.

Re: Mining Equiment with Durant STAR engine

Do you have any idea when this was manufactured? I'm planning to pass this info on to the museum director. Was this carb factory installed or something that would work if you had to use?

Re: Mining Equiment with Durant STAR engine

The engine, trans, frame setup is late '26-early '27. The winch could of been built anytime after that.
The carb is not stock but added after the Tillotson MV-1B conked out. Model A carbs were plentiful and cheap for many years.

Re: Mining Equiment with Durant STAR engine

Thanks, Don! I'll be passing this along to the museum. I doubt they have any of this info. Imagine, today, trying to put a Ford throttle body on a Chevy or something!
