Goodness .. I just checked in for a few sec to see whats up. I didn't expect this. Thanks for your concerns.
This is s very brief overview of the last two years.
She had a double fissure two summers ago and the surgeon botched the op and didn't take care of the infection. His specialty is breast cancer not rectal problems. Later on we got another surgeon, that it is her specialty, and fixed the others mess and has been trying to handle the infection. She in turn got a Gasto doc involved last Nov. It got worse mid summer on that Di had no control of her bodily functions, and constantly day and night to toilet, if she even made it. Antibiotic's seemed to hold it, but once off them it all came back. Gasto doc feels its ulcerous colitis. She was to have a full scope Feb 9th, but I had to rush her to the hospital 6 am of the 8th, for coughing up blood. 3 am next morning I was called to the hospital and almost lost her by seconds. Nurse wondered why her blood pressure was going up and found her unable to breath.

They wanted to fly her to Kingston or Toronto asap for specialists that handle lung bleeding. No beds. They had her already moved to emerg to fly to Montreal. Montreal flatly refused her and Queensway Hospital has no idea why. She was moved back up into ICU at Qway. They don't have specialists at Qway so she was mainly a test case. Thought was pneumonia perhaps but could be an off shoot of the colitis. Seems in some people the colitis can attack the lungs. Finally General hospital the other side of Ottawa took her, where she is now. Both the Civic and General are bigger hospitals with specialists, so she's in critical care unit having a machine breath for her. Its still unknown what the problem is. Biopsy was done from her left side and its a 50 50 chance it might give them a clue. No results back on that, yet.

They took her off the machine and removed the tube Tues as it seemed she could handle breathing on her own, but later that night they had a facemask with 80 % oxygen. It was touch and go in the morning if the tube and machine would be reintroduced again. No one wants that, and be back on sedation again as well. I just shudder every time the phone rings, its not the hospital with bad news.

We might be getting there. Still no idea of cause or what, but she's got face mask instead of machine breathing for her. Biopsy drain tubes removed this morning but not a peep about the biopsy testing. Doc doom and gloom, about pulling the plug by me or into a home for what life she might have left, was replaced by another doc yesterday. "When she goes home" (its those 4 words we are hanging onto), I have a list of things she will need to take. The high steroids she's on will cause bone problems and easy breakage. To offset .. milk, calcium pills, etc.

Today .. big surprise when we got there. She's a fighter and your thoughts must be helping as well. They are waiting for a reg ward to move her to, from ICU. There isn't a bed anywhere in the General, its full up. All tubes, machines, wires are now gone and they attempted to get her walking with a walker. Still has oxygen nose clip and Picc tube for bloodwork, also have her on solid foods now.

No idea of the orig cause and they may never tell us. I think she still has a long way to go before she comes home. Its been one heck of a ride for us so far, and I don't wish it on anyone. Still pumping steroids in her and offsetting with insulin to keep blood sugar down. Few other pills and needles I don't know what they are for. I mentioned she better not drink water or she will leak like a lawn sprinkler with all the holes they have put in her. grin. She does not recall anything prior to being taken off the breathing machine, since Feb 8th. Thank goodness for that, only the family has knowledge of that horror.

Today has me puzzled .. Asked us if it was ok to see if Qway will take Di back, seeing as General has no beds. Both Qway and General have specialists in the lung department. Great by us as Qway is just near us and I could probably walk there on a nice summers day. Couple of miles maybe as the crow flies. Part that has me puzzled is nurse commented moving Di there for 2 or 3 days for tests. Home after ???? Can't see she's anywhere near coming home without some form of mobility on her part. Can see me now buying the other half of the drug store to add to her previous pills etc. sigh. Not as bad as it sounds. Once 65 and older Ont health (OHIP) pays for most pills. Everyone 65 and older pays max of $100 a year, then $4.11 a presription after. OHIP also covers hospital for standard ward. ICU / isolation is fully covered. My MetLife (retired employee), now SunLife covers semi private and I would have to pay $40 a day for private. Interesting letter I got today from MetLife in Can. They are presently concluding its business in Canada and office closing.

Nurse said it was the steriods that's causing this turn around so fast. They still have no idea of the cause and biopsy results can be weeks or months.
Was real neat. They did ultra sound of her heart and I asked if it was a boy or girl. Looked just like womb pics as valves opened and closed. They are also concerned about her heart after what's she's been through.

Haven't kept this up. She was moved back to Queensway and it seemed to be looking good. Not much voice with the breathing tube in her throat / lungs for so long. I got called in Fri at 5 am as she was rushed back to ICU unable to breath again. Bleeding into the lungs and all the other problems. We were told by doc they were going to keep steroids as was but unknown to me they reduced them. Natch it all came back. She's back on the breathing machine, partly sedated, and loads of IV's again. Unknown what causes it, nor how to treat it. Steroid's help but you can't stay on them. And yes lied to as they knew the results of the biopsy. One of the biopsy tubes has been reinserted for (one doc) preventing the lung to collapse (another doc) just in case a bubble of air forms outside the lung in the body where the biopsy was done. My whole 4 weeks is different doc's and nurses, constantly like revolving doors, with their own ideas and comments, so you don't know what's right or wrong or going on. Again I was told she's very very ill and can go either way.
