Now you've done it Arthur .. more questions for me.
The head has the info on it front passenger top. I know the Fronty C600 / C400, 1933 / 1934 motors have C600 and C400 cast as part of it. I just went out and checked Dorothy. Everyone talks 22A motor but my block says 22AA (whatever AA means)and now checking the head it has a big M 1 and under that is 22AA617.
Block cast May 13 1931 and head cast April 13 1931. Car is late 1932 I think with no production records, and since we used up existing US parts under Dominion Motors for the 1931 / 32, 614 / 618's and Frontenac's, it makes sense older engines would be used. Stephan's 1931 614 is a month cast before mine, but my block serial number is very much higher. However its the 617 has me wondering if the head (or engine) was originally meant for a 617 but used in my 614. There is no sign the motor was ever changed. 614 is 58 hp and 617 is 70 hp.

Hi Dave .. .that's what has me puzzled . My old 1930 614 of the 1960's had 22A614 on the head. This has 22AA617. Checked it again. Terrys site mentions 15U for 617.
Main point was for Arthur, that the head (and block)has 22A or 22AA cast on it to identify what to look for. I assume as does the 32A used on some Durant / Frontenac's 31 - 33. Thought I saw a list somewhere of motors used on our cars, but can't seem to find it.
1935 and 1938 parts catalogues don't help either and don't mention 22A or 32A just replacement blocks / heads but not consistant one catalogue to the other. 1935 has same block for 633, 670 and 685 inc E, 70, 75, 611, 614, 615, 616. 1938 has 633, 670, 685 seperate from the others and omits 70, 75. They didn't use 22A motors in 70 or 75 did they ?? Before you mention US cars, both my catalogues are Leaside and exclude 610, 612, 617, 619. Constant confusion with anything pertaining to our cars
Hi ya"ll. Now you have me completely confused. I thought that the 22a durant was made in the old Sharedon palnt in 1922 and that it had an over head valve motor. Rick . Is this what you are looking for
W4 22 - 25 Star
A22 1921 - 26 Durant
B22 22 - 24 Durant
W5 used after W4 in Star and up to 29 Durants
14L 27 - 28 Star and Durant's
15L used after the 14L
15U 617 D's
W8 407 Durant
22A - 22AA used 30 - 32 Durant and Frontenac's
32A some 31 - 32 D's after the 22A or 22AA and also 1933 model 633 D and 33 / 34 C600 Frontenac's. Don't know what the C400 used presently.
That's what I have so far. So yes A22 1st D's and 22A the last. Its as bad as our serial numbers starting at T1001 each model and year, same as all the other plants. Thank goodness we went alpha 1931 but wonder what they would have used if the plant continued past 1934 and the alphabet ?
