Re: LOCOMOBILE Models and Engines

I have heard of guys putting IHC Red Diamond engines in their Packards. They are 450 or 500 cu in sixes. Getting close to that T-head Locomotive size! But they get those heavy old heaps really rolling from Minnesota to Arizona.

Re: LOCOMOBILE Models and Engines

Cdmn,
Yes you are right most of those big "Ole" Locomobile and other Big Classic "T" and "L" head engines were huge, low compression, not real high horsepowered but were real Torque-monsters. All the better to get 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 Tons rolling!

The FAGEOL from 1921 (Fagol Motors Co.,Hollywood Cal.) was a 142 inch WB, 6 Cyl, 825 CID (5" X 7" Bore & Stroke)Hall Scott monster, that put out 125 Hp at 1300 RPM! Sold as a Chassis only on 34 X 4.50 Tires, and priced at $12,000 in 1921! Wow, 825 Cubic Inches!

Re: LOCOMOBILE Models and Engines

The sad thing is they were built to run forever, but we threw them away when they were 3 years old.

Count Louis Zboroswski's original Chitty Bang Bang had a big engine, a 23 litre six cylinder Maybach aero engine. The car ended up in a junkyard, but there was no real-life Caracticus Potts to rescue it.

But Zb' built an even bigger one, "Babs" which used a US Army Surplus airplane engine, a 1918 V12 27 litre Liberty. [Engineered and built by Packard.] That's just about 1650 cu in. It used an obsolete chain drive Mercedes Benz running gear from 1908. It set a speed record, but a year later crashed while trying to defend it. The car was buried in beach sand for 42yrs, but then dug up and restored.
