How do I give a bolt a Raven Finish?

I putting my 1950 Mercury back together so I can move it out of my garage and bring my Star in. Ford used bolts with a finish that they called Raven. It is black and looks a little like the bluing on rifles. Does anyone know how this finish was (can be) done?

Vince,

Many times you can find the right sized bolts with that raven finish from most Model A Ford suppliers. I've met a couple of people who have had good results with gun bluing producs
from most gun supply stores, but haven't tried it myself..

Re: How do I give a bolt a Raven Finish?

Hello Vince,
in the film industry we are using a two part solution to blacken cables.
I is called tool black and you should be able to get it at a industrial supplier for
logging and rigging. The fluids are blue like windshield washer fluid.
it is a bit stincky but works instantly.
Hope this helps

Franz
