So... I'm taking apart one of my engines to do you guys a favour. I picked the one most likely to run again...
the bearings in the rods seems to have crystalized and one rod bearing is lifting out in blocks ( little oblong hunks of bearing material). Are shell bearings inserts available for the 4 cylinder continental engine or do I have to pour babbit??
Brent,
There are no shell bearings available for the W4 & 5 engines. They could be machined for shell bearings IF you could ever find a set that would work properly.
On another note, the crankshaft bearings are replaceable upper babbitt shells and poured lower caps. When renewing, you would purchase new upper babbitt inserts and new or re-poured main caps.
Anyone who pours babbitt for Model T or A Fords can rebuild your rods for you.
