I own a 1929 Durant Model 666. The blue paint is faded and almost gone in spots. It comes off on the drying towels when I wash the car. I was trying to avoid re-painting since it is the original paint, but this may not be possible. Any suggestions?
Howdy Alex.
The Duco paint in those days was not much better than Crayolas are today for automobile use. What you're seeing on your drying towel is paint oxidation.
If your sheet metal is good I would recommend stripping to bare metal and prepping thru with Single Stage Urethane Acrylic paint. Spray 4-5 coats of color, wait two weeks, color sand with 800 grit thru 2000 grit and buff to high luster. The result will be a hand rubbed lacquer look with a mirror finish that you can clearly see the cracks between your teeth.
