Hello,

My name is Jim Miller. Your website has some great information. I have spent thousands of hours (with the aid of other’s work also) researching my genealogy. I descend from a Patrick Miller (b-1620 Scotland) who arrived in what is now Middlesex County, Virginia, USA about 1650. Patrick Miller had associations with the Kemp Colonial Tobacco port in Middlesex County, Virginia. His descendants also owned & operated taverns/ordinaries/dry goods stores as well as grain and saw mills in Virginia. They associated with or married into many families with surnames associated with the Glasgow Tobacco Merchants (Alexander’s; Hill’s; Anderson’s; etc.). They also seemed to have ties to the Murdoch’s and Yuiell’s.

There is a possible even earlier tie to the Glasgow tobacco trade in a document I found in Extracts from the Burgh of Glasgow. On 1/2/1636 (maybe not corrected to modern calendar so could have been 1/2/1637) a James Miller and nine others were granted licenses for the retailing of tobacco in Glasgow. There is no way to know for sure; however this may have been the James Miller who arrived in Virginia, USA on 4/26/1637 on the ship Tristram & Jane from London. I feel this Virginia James Miller was possibility Patrick Miller\'s b-1620 older brother due to some ties between the two families while in Virginia. James Miller may have represented the Glasgow Miller family in London/Bristol, England since it appears James Miller married a Mary Trottman. The Trottman’s were merchants in London and Bristol, England who had ties to the Merchant Adventurers of England.

So it is quite possible my Miller’s in early Virginia were some of the first Scotsmen associated with the tobacco trade back to Glasgow, Scotland (60 to 70 years prior to it being sanctioned by the English government). Something significant impacted my Miller’s in Virginia in the latter 1700’s; they suddenly left the coastal area of Virginia and purchased land inland along a colonial roadway spanning hundreds of miles. It appears they moved into a business of transporting supplies for George Washington’s armies based on a couple of documents I found. This significant impact may have been the sudden drop of tobacco trade with Scotland leading up to the American Revolution.

I would love to discuss my research with you or others that have knowledge/interest in the early Scottish tobacco trade in America. I also wish any information/direction on how to trace my Miller’s back to the Miller Glasgow tobacco merchants. My Miller’s in Virginia used many of the same given names as the Glasgow Miller merchants (William, John, James, Charles, Alexander, Andrew).

I have found a photo of \"1920 washday\" on pinterest with glasgowhistory.com given as a reference and would like permission to reuse it on the Penwith Local History Group website (which I\'m afraid is about as far as you can get from Glasgow - but it illustrates a story we want to use).

We can\'t offer payment but would be happy to credit you. Hope you can help

Many thanks,

Hello East Glasgow, I am wondering if you have an old photo of Dalmarnock Rd., particularly the block where 228 Dalmarnock Rd. was. My grandmother was born in the tenement house there and I have her birth certificate with 228 Dalmarnock Rd. on it. I live in Grimsby, Ontario, Canada now and am writing a book about my grandmother\'s history. I have looked on the glesga site and made inquiries to the Mitchell Library but haven\'t been successful. Any help you can give me is much appreciated. Thank you.

Browsing this website as myself and my husband are on holiday in Scotland and are planning on visiting Shettleston on our way home . My Mum was brought up in Shettleston Killin Street and when my Grandfather died moved down to live in Wales as her Mother was Welsh and wanted to return to her family . I have many memories of visiting family and family friends every year and staying in Shettleston . The picture I have found on your site is of my Grandfather in front of his shop John White Butchers in Shettleston .

Hi, I was just looking at your interesting websight in regard to the Barony of Glasgow Church featured on it. I was baptised there in 1945 and so I was interested to see what the church looked like, great memories, and I will go visit it when I am back in Glasgow, presuming it\'s still there. Thanks again.

I was one of the girls who attended the Shettleston Co-operative choir....AT the back of the cash desk in co-0p was a door that took you across a path to a large building where on ground floor Mrs Campbell took the choir.....i was four when i started and then we moved up to Eastbank Academy till i was 17...then i left.. But we have the most wonderfu ltimes with Faith CAmpbell when yearly we went to Bellahouston Academy and sang for cups....and we won many.....these must be somewhere in the Co-operative buildings... FAith Campbell was a married lady from Rutherglen who took the choir for many years and we were very admired.......fiona Cowie
