You never really own a domain name, you only rent it. The rent is paid for on a yearly basis. There are no partial refunds, and you can not change a domain name. That domain will be yours to use until April 2011. But there is nothing stopping you from buying another one.
If the domain name you want is available, you can purchase it, and switch your web site from using the old domain name to the new one. The old one will still be yours, but if you don't pay the rent when it expires in April 2011, it will go back to the pool of available domain names. You will no longer own it.
