Yeah, a few people (including myself) have pointed it out on the rage Facebook page. Even just listening to the songs for 5 seconds would make it obvious they're completely different.

Nathan, do you think you could upload Lisa Edwards 'Cry' to YouTube? There is a really bad VHS upload from the rage Top 60.of 1992.

Michael, I uploaded it here in 2011: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgwfdK84YOE from one of the Video Hits DVD's.

It doesn't appear in the search results though when you search for 'lisa edwards cry' - presumably youtube think my upload is a duplicate of that version you mention Unfortunately that happens from time to time (and is completely unpredictable). Actually, I think the uploader of the other video is a member here.

Re: Every Monday night (Tuesday morning) on ABC1 now a Vault special

Nathan, your video is searchable through google, but not youtube itself (there's also a Wheatleyrecords version uploaded since yours). Funny too that Lisa Edward's own channel only has 3 videos, not including Cry.

Your upload is excellent, youtube's own search needs to pull their socks up.

I usually add a few chorus lyrics to the video description, to help people who don't know the exact title find it, and it gets some hits from people searching for 'you make me wanna cry' as a result. It has just over half of the views of the much lower quality version.

While these "themes" are kinda interesting, it would be good if they did Artist specials from the 80s and 90s, you know, just because they can. There is so much stuff from that era that is not available commercially.

There have been a few good themed Vault shows airing on Monday night, but on the whole it seems they're still afraid to include anything pop or dance, which is disappointing. I wish rage didn't feel the need to be 'alternative' or Triple J-esque all the time.

Yeah don't get me wrong, there have been some real gems played, and we should be extremely grateful that rage are having a 'vault' night every week, not just occasionally. It means 150 to 200 hours of vault clips every year instead of maybe 6 hours with a single vault special once per year.

But sometimes the playlists seem like a missed opportunity - playing stuff that quite frankly has been played quite a bit or is not rare. While there are some rare clips on last night's playlist (and thanks rage for that!) there is also stuff like "Song To The Siren" which has been played lots of times. What about playing TMC's "Acid Bitter And Sad" instead which hasn't had an airing for more than 10 years? Or "Late Night"? And there's plenty of other examples.

Maybe I'm being too picky.

Exactly, and I totally agree with the 'missed opportunity' comment.

There were about 5 clips I didn't have & kept from this morning's show, but why re-hash stuff they semi-regularly play anyway, like 'Song To the Siren' (as you said) and 'In Between Days'?

An '80's' theme is so broad... they could have filled the whole playlist with stuff they haven't aired ever/in many, many years.

That It's Immaterial video just aired in January!

More alternative crap tonight

Well, the Pixies and Husker Du had their moments...

I sent rage a request list last week - videos they have either never shown or haven't shown for 15+ years. Seeing they have over 100 hours of retro programming to fill this year, it will be interesting to see how many of my requests get played.

I also asked them to indicate which videos they do not have on my list, so that I will stop requesting them. I suspect they don't have around half of them, but we'll see. Any kind of reply would be nice.

Re: Every Monday night (Tuesday morning) on ABC1 now a Vault special

^ Oh, I do like some alternative music, definitely. Just I get annoyed when rage favour it over other genres when they have a chance to air something different.

Rage aired a couple of videos ripped from youtube on Saturday night's show just gone. Although it's nice to see something different/rare, I wish they wouldn't do this, as the quality looks so bad on TV (especially when they had to blur out a logo and left a 'thanks for watching' message put on the video by the uploader at the end).

Rage re-aired a slab of the 2014 Vault Special on ABC last night, interestingly. Their Monday morning programming seems to usually have a vault repeat (a few weeks ago they re-aired the Jon English etc. tributes), but is hard to predict what they'll air.

Tonight's Vault show has a 'The Wedding Singer' movie theme:

PRESIDENTS OF THE USA, THE Video Killed The Radio Star
BILLY IDOL White Wedding
SMITHS, THE How Soon Is Now
ADAM SANDLER Somebody Kill Me
THOMPSON TWINS Hold Me Now
ELVIS COSTELLO Everyday I Write The Book
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN Hungry Heart
DAVID BOWIE China Girl
SUGAR HILL GANG Rappers Delight

FALCO Der Kommissar
NENA 99 Luftballoons
MADONNA Holiday
SPANDAU BALLET TRUE
NEW ORDER Blue Monday
JAN HAMMER Miami Vice Theme
LIONEL RICHIE All Night Long
WHAM Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
DEAD OR ALIVE You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)
FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD Relax

Rage aired a YouTube rip? That's incredible, I would have thought that without the broadcasting rights from the copyright owner, they would not be able to do that. So if a clip is not already in their library, they would have to seek the rights first. I didn't record any of last Saturday's show so I didn't see it.

They aired about 5 clips from youtube... it was bad! They were all pretty obscure clips, so I didn't mind seeing them, but the quality was shocking.

They aired this video, for example, complete with blurred out logo top left, and 'thanks for watching :)' at the end:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6tnj7IEI0E

I think they might have re-dubbed the audio with CD audio though. It sounded alright.

I loved that Ariel Pink guest programming slot from last week. It looked like at least 10 clips had been ripped from YouTube, some real rarities that I am sure Rage don't have in their archives as promos.

I don't mind the minor quality issues as these are clips you would never see otherwise. Opus - Live Is Life I first heard on a compilation album in the mid 80's but I think this is the first time I have seen the clip on Rage. Australia's Lin Van Heck with her Terminator video and a bunch of others made this one of the best GP specials I have seen. I don't tend to keep much from Rage anymore but kept that entire episode.

Re: Every Monday night (Tuesday morning) on ABC1 now a Vault special

This morning's episode of rage was a Stock/Aitken/Waterman-themed Vault show; the playlist was up on the website on Friday night, though.

Tonight's Vault show's playlist won't be up on the website until tomorrow, so here it is (Wu-Tang Clan being the theme):

WU-TANG CLAN, THE C.R.E.A.M.
WU-TANG CLAN, THE Method Man
REDMAN/METHOD MAN How High
GHOSTFACE KILLAH All That I Got Is You
WU-TANG CLAN, THE Protect Ya Neck (The Jump Off)

Nothing of interest to me, but I don't care after this morning's SAW special.

Australia's Lin Van Heck with her Terminator video and a bunch of others made this one of the best GP specials I have seen. I don't tend to keep much from Rage anymore but kept that entire episode.

Of the videos I kept from that show, I noticed that these were youtube rips:

Amit Kumar, Vijay Benedict & Chorus - I Am a Break Dancer (the correct artist/title credit for the clip rage had mis-labelled [as it appears on youtube] as 'It's My Challenge', credited to the Bollywood performer who dances in the video [but doesn't actually sing the song])

Arthur Brown - Busha Busha
Jimmy Smack - Hating Life
Linn Van Hek - Intimacy
Serge Gainsbourg - No Comment
The Seebach Band - Apache
Zlad - Electronik Supersonik

Some (Linn Van Hek) were better quality than others. The audio was out of sync on a few of them, too.

As you say, they were interesting videos to see, but I still hope rage don't do this often in future, as it kind of defeats the purposes of requesting rare videos if you can just download the same quality from youtube.

Re: Every Monday night (Tuesday morning) on ABC1 now a Vault special

Agree. If YT has a decent quality copy of a rare clip, I can download it myself. I don't need rage to air it. The reason we push rage to show rare clips is because the quality (should) be better than anything else out there in the cloud.

Precisely!

I think this has happened because rage now accept online submissions for videos. They prefer HD format for them, from memory after looking at the updated submissions page; but youtube HD isn't real HD. When you compare file sizes, a youtube HD video is usually about the same/smaller size as a SD video recorded in SP from TV.

Also the last time it aired, it had the "PG" icon over it at the start.

Not a bad playlist that one, although quite a few common ones among the rarer. Cocteau Twins get another airing after Pearly Dew Drops Drops a few weeks ago, nice one.

Re: Every Monday night (Tuesday morning) on ABC1 now a Vault special

I remember the PG logo last time, too. And yes there were a few commonly-seen clips, but also a few I was hoping would air again without the watermark.

Re: Every Monday night (Tuesday morning) on ABC1 now a Vault special

Interesting - PETER GABRIEL and YOUSSOU N'DOUR "Shaking The Tree" was not in the first playlist!

So they shortened the first playlist, then lengthened it by 1 song

It's a good song, rage hasn't played that clip for more than 15 years.

I gather they had to find a shorter clip than 'Don't Give Up' to fit the timeslot, then found another Peter Gabriel collaboration.

It's interesting though to think that maybe they have 'back-up' selections for these kinds of playlists.

Re: Every Monday night (Tuesday morning) on ABC1 now a Vault special

It seems that a large proportion of these Tue morning Vault programmes been along the lines of rap, R'n'B, ghetto etc... and very little has been of the era and biases of the readers of this forum

It's been great to have regular Vault shows, and there's certainly been a few real gems among the dross, but this show seems to have largely become the plaything of those who enjoy a particular style of music.

I agree, there has been WAY too much r&b/rap featured in these shows of late, while completely ignoring other genres I'd love to see, such as late 80s/early 90's dance etc. But you're right, there have been some great shows and rare clips shown. Plus with this weekend's Vault special, we can't really complain.

But late 90's/00's stuff is not 'Vault' at all to me.

Sunday night's ABC episode (which seems to be an intermittent rather than regular thing) was a Radiohead special. Again, typical rage, but I didn't mind as there were 2 or 3 early videos of theirs shown that I wanted to grab. They also had the playlist up on the rage website before it aired. It seems like Sunday night's ABC shows are more open to being an artist special, like the days of old.

Re: Every Monday night (Tuesday morning) on ABC1 now a Vault special

No playlist for tonight's Vault program yet... I'm guessing there won't be either, at this hour.

Re: Every Monday night (Tuesday morning) on ABC1 now a Vault special

A fairly mundane playlist... most of those clips get a semi-regular airing. The Bangles clip hasn't been played in a long time. The Muppets clip was definitely a YouTube rip. Unbelievable.

They aired that Muppet clip a few months ago, and yes it's definitely a youtube rip. It even has out-of-sync audio.

I agree that the playlist was a bit mundane, but there were a couple of clips they hadn't aired in a long time/ever before. They haven't aired 'Going Down To Liverpool', 'Get Rhythm', 'Has Anyone Seen My Baby', 'Stick Around' or 'Beast of Burden' at least since the playlists have been online (1998). But apart from those, yes there were a bunch of clips they regularly air. I think this happens when they're boxed into sticking with a theme. I wish sometimes that they'd ditch the themes and just play random Vault clips they haven't aired in a long time/ever.

'Beast of Burden' to me looked a bit jittery - like it was an NTSC clip they had converted to PAL.
