Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

Good idea for a thread.

The Fischer Z song is one of my favourites from 1988.

Wow at Glenn Medeiros, not because I like it particularly, but it's possibly one of the most un-Rage-like videos I can think of.

Yes... though I suppose it has a certain 'ironic' quality to it that the rage programmers can appreciate.

Pity the rest of the playlist is bog-standard stuff.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

None of my 5 videos got selected either which rather annoys me.

Seeing some of them I chose got played so much on Saturday nights when rage began, anyhow...

It seems only myself, Guru Bob, Nathan and a few others here are the ones who request anything remotely interesting on rage. The 'general viewers' choices are more than standard nothingness, what a seriously boring Playlist this Saturday night. I hope the rage specials coming up on Monday night etc, like the doco's are somewhat more interesting ...

I too found Glen Medeiros an interesting choice simply because I haven't seen it on rage since the OZ TOP 50.

J Geils died? ... Dear me ... His music always reminds me of COuntdown 1982

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

I thought the requests had to be 1987 onwards. There are some on the playlist that are way before.

What's interesting about rage showing Glenn Medeiros is that they had gotten rid of the video already by the end of 1988 (along with several other big chart hits that year), as it's missing from the top 50 of 1988 chart Countdown.

Yes, overall this weekend's playlists are rather boring.

Yes, 'Material Girl', 'Ashes To Ashes' and Dolly Parton's '9 To 5' being obvious examples.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

It is incredibly frustrating that such common videos made the cut, ones that are so easily obtainable, even for the general public who can easily watch them on youtube or VEVO. It makes you wonder why anyone would list them, given the infinite possibilities of a top 5 of almost anything, even with the "limitation" of starting at 1987 (which they and Rage have ignored).
I didn't send a list of requests because I assumed it wouldn't be considered anyway. I've made several requests over the years through the request function on the website (nothing obscure, all charting songs that have videos that were originally aired, such as 'It's Your Move' by Zan), which have never been acknowledged, nor have the videos ever eventuated.

rage don't even seem to ask for suggestions for their Saturday morning Vault segment themes that often anymore. The last one I can think of where they took any notice of the suggestions (other than the most common, obvious clips) was their doomsday-themed playlist back in January.

Their 20th and 25th anniversary specials weren't that exciting either, I remember.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

I saw the playlist and what c r a p to celebrate 30 years! None of my videos got played either. The closest was Fleetwood Mac's 'Seven Wonders'. I requested 'Big Love'.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

This weekend's playlist are up. My playlist wasn't chosen again...

Some retro videos that haven't been shown for a while airing this weekend:

Saturday morning:

NATALIE COLE Pink Cadillac ()
EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL Temperamental (Virgin)
ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Tennessee (EMI)

Saturday night:

IGNATIUS JONES Like A Ghost () (did your playlist get chosen Jason?)
JODY WATLEY Looking For A New Love ()
PEBBLES Girlfriend ()
MALCOLM McLAREN Deep In Vogue (Epic) (though aired on a Vault Monday night ep recently)
GRANDMASTER CHICKEN and DJ DUCK Check Out The Chicken ()
SKID ROW Youth Gone Wild ()
VENETIANS Bitter Tears ()
BEARGARDEN The Finer Things ()
MACHINATIONS My Heart's On Fire () (WOW! )

It's not that rare, but I'm glad they're playing 'Pink Cadillac', as it wasn't shown during their meager Natalie Cole tribute last year.

A generally more-interesting playlist for me than last week's, but still plenty of Triple J dross they air all the time in between...

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

My Playlist wasn't chosen either but there are some SERIOUUUUUS GEMS played this weekend!!!!

IGNATIUS JONES - LIKE A GHOST !!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH

THE QUICK The Rhythm Of The Jungle!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH

JODY WATLEY Looking For A New Love
PEBBLES Girlfriend
DALE BOZZIO Simon Simon
JESSE JOHNSON Love Struck
GRANDMASTER CHICKEN and DJ DUCK Check Out The Chicken
BEARGARDEN The Finer Things !!!!!!!!!!!!!
MACHINATIONS My Heart's On Fire !!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HOW HEAVENLY!!!!!!

The thing I am annoyed about is when I submitted my 5 video's the rules were that they had to be from 1987 on wards and um .... there are videos going back to 1982, arghhhhhhhh ..... I would have chosen some RARE Early 80s GEMS !!!!!

And ooooh, Pink Cadillac, I HOPE it is the HOUSE MIX that rage used to play on the OZ TOP 50, pleaseeeeeeeeee

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

I wonder if Ignatius Jones with Like A Ghost will be the Countdown performance or video.

The only time I have seen Like A Ghost on rage was from the 1982 COUNTDOWN episode hosted by Ignatius and it was the studio performance. I have the video in NTSC but rage have never played it.

And I HOPE that Machinations - My Hearts On Fire video is not from Countdown and is a full promo video !!!

AND - The Finer Things, I wonder if that is coming from Rock Arena or again, a full promo video from rage's archives ...

Very interesting indeed ***** Waaaay better line up this weekend but still annoyed my Playlist didn't make it since I have been a loyal rage watcher since the beginning

Yes, if any viewer should get to program rage, it is you! Though 5 songs was pretty measly... but better than nothing.

And yes, how stupid rage ignored their own 'rules' for entering this, by allowing pre-1987 videos. But it's a good thing if rare videos get shown.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

Darrrrrrrn, Pink Cadillac from Natalie Cole this morning was the standard version. The HOUSE MIX s h i t s all over the 7" version.

I've got the 12" version of the video sourced from an official PAL VHS compilation if you need it.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

I used to love watching the house mix of Pink Cadillac during the rage Top 50 too. Geez it's good to hear people remember stuff like that which at times you think only you remember useless s h i t like that.

Oh, I remember lots of useless s h i t; it's like my brain was wired to retain it

They also aired the house mix of Climie Fisher's 'Love Changes (Everything)' during the top 50.

Frustrating that PG logos were placed on The Mavis's 'Thunder' and Beargarden's 'The Finer Things' last night . I wish the ABC wouldn't do that at 5 and 6am.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

Yes, Climie Fischer too! Rage should do a night of extended mixes of videos...and what about last nights extended mix of 'Looking for a New Love'!!!!

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

Also, if i knew that rage were going to play 'pop', i would have submitted a totally different playlist. I must admit Looking For A New Love did come to mind, and it was 1987, but thought it wouldn't be in their library and was too pop for rage.

rage aired an extended version of Jody Watley's 'Don't You Want Me' in 2012 too. Maybe they only have extended versions of her videos . I think I caught the 12" videos of 'Real Love' and 'Friends' on rage in 1989.

They aired the extended 'Deep In Vogue' as well, as they did for their Malcolm McLaren tribute in 2010, and a couple of weeks ago in their 'white room' Monday night Vault episode.

A night or Vault episode of extended mixes is a good idea.

This is the trouble with trying to second guess what rage have/what they're likely to approve when one of the criteria is how much they like your playlist.

I'm still hoping they'll locate Kylie Mole's 'So Excellent' video one day.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

Did anybody have a little glitch at the start of The Quick video by any chance?

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

I just noticed that rage made a boo-boo. That was B.A. Robertson's 'Kool In the Kaftan' they aired, not 'Flight 19'

If you meant a visual glitch, yes there's a frame where there's a flash of white something to the left of the picture.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

Yes, the BA Roberson was the wrong track and video, I noticed this while watching. As Flight 19 was the video played on a Countdown Episode with Little Nell which I requested and was played in January 2016.

But it was good to get a different video ...

Lee, I will watch my copy of Rhythm Of The Jungle from The Quick again to see

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

Check Out The Chicken was my second choice in my selections, I couldn't believe it when I saw the video playlisted. I was bummed out though when my name didn't appear before the video, somebody else's did. What are the chances of that happening on a video like that, that hasn't been played in 25 years?, lol. I'd long forgotten about that song but a small part of it appeared on a show like Better Homes And Gardens a few months ago so my ears ******* up and I went straight to you tube and watched a dodgy copy.

MICHAEL PENN No Myth ()
THE OUTFIELD Your Love
SIGUE SIGUE SPUTNIK 21st Century Boy (aired in 2009 though)

It looks like the Saturday morning 'Vault' segment this week is Rihanna I thought she must have died or something.

The Outfield is a good one too.

Oddly enough, "Fresh' doesn't seem to have been released individually in Australia. It should have gone between 'Misled" (March 1985) and 'Cherish' (September 1985), but instead seems to have been bunched together with 'Misled' (possibly as a medley) as a b-side to 'Cherish'. Only "Cherish' got any videoplay at the time.

It's odd that they've found 'Freedom', which was never played at the time, but not 'Fable', which was.

The rest of the playlists look extremely dreary and alternative, with only a tiny sprinkling of retro consisting of incredibly common videos that surely everyone has seen a million times like "Waterfalls', 'Thriller' or 'Higher Love'.

I don't think I've even heard 'Freedom' before. I did a search on their playlists and they haven't played any of his videos since playlists have been online (January 1998).

I wasn't expecting them to do a tribute at all, but since they posted news of his death on the facebook page, I thought they maybe they would.

I noticed on the '90s dance' (which was entirely late 90s/2000 videos) Vault episode last year that they played a couple of videos they never aired as new releases. Similarly, I discovered recently that they never aired Ace of Base's 'Cruel Summer' in 1998, but did last year during the Nigel Dick (video director)-hosted special on a Sunday night.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

The singer from Soundgaren has died. I expect a multi-hour rage tribute, as he was an 'alternative' musician.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

Tonight there's a 3-hour tribute to Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden singer.

Saturday morning vault section (repeated Sunday morning ABC, Sunday night ABC ME, and Tuesday night ABC ME):

Hopefully in the not-too-distant future.

I remember waiting ages, like 5+ months, for the Suggs guest programming to air in 2009. Back when they actually had 'coming up...' on the (old) rage website, it was put on there, then disappeared soon after, and I remember eventually asking on the old rage website forum when it was going to air. They probably forgot about it is my guess.

Re: The 'retro videos those who don't regularly check the rage playlists might miss' thread

According to the ebroadcast tv guide, The Clouds will be guest programming on Saturday 3rd June. But it is the advised day only and subject to change.

It's a shame it's not "She Loves She", Deadstar's first ever video and the only one I don't have. I've requested it a few times.

It's on YouTube with the rage logo / Eurostyle font title, so they must have played it in the late 90s or early 2000's but the online playlists don't list it as having being played at all!!

The uploader must have also accepted Youtube's generous "would you like us to stabilise your video?" offer (when it thinks a video is shaky) because it's been absolutely butchered - bouncing around all over the place, distorted like a rubber mat being stretched, you name it. Truly horrible.

Hopefully rage still have it and will play it again one day.

discogs.com has the release year as 1995. Your best bet might be to request it for November/Aus Music Month again. I've seen that stabilisation thing on YouTube, but have never taken it up - just as well by the sounds of it!

Just looking at the video now... I hate when people crop a 4:3 to appear 'widescreen'! How on earth anyone thinks that is somehow improving the video is beyond me.
