Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

The Reels in the studio performing "Shout & Deliver" is on an unrepeated 1980 Countdown which would also be welcome.

Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

Wasn't it recently the 40th anniversary of Triple J or something?

Expect a night jam-packed with JJJ faves to commemorate (even though nobody asked for it)... like a repeat of that Reels concert, a Nick Cave Rock Arena special (probably also a repeat), followed by a repeat of that Nick Cave live concert that aired during retro month in 2011 or 2012, and then double Recovery

I surely hope not.

They're playing the top 10 videos from the first ever Hottest 100 on Saturday morning during the Vault segment, so it wouldn't be that far-fetched for them to continue the Triple J 'theme' on Saturday night

Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

The Reels were an ok band - I remember some time ago their song (might have been JJJ) "Quasimodo's Dream" was voted the best ever Australian song.

Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

Always liked "Shout & Deliver" and a few of the cover versions as well from unusual originals like Jim Reeves, Herb Alpert, 5th Dimension etc - but how Quasimodos Dream could have been voted Australias best song, well better left unsaid. If it was anything to do with JJJ I would not be too surprised.

A whole night devoted to the 40th anniversary - it could be possible, but arent they doing the Top 100 Countdown the following week on the Friday night?. It would make sense to follow that with wall-to-wall JJJ-related material on the Saturday night to finish "retro" season.

In either case could be a well-earned night off for me in which I do not go near Rage just like the other 11 months of the year.

Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

It's a quirky & interesting song but wouldn't be my #1. Perhaps "Great Southern Land"

What 5th Dimension song did they cover?

Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

If I had to choose my ultimate australian classic of all time, it would be either Inxs "Stay young" or Australian Crawl's "Reckless", Possibly Splitenz's "History never repeats".

Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

Mine would be 'Great Southern Land' or INXS 'Don't Change'. For some reason 'Don't Change' sounds like an Australian patriotic song to me.

Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

Looks like I might be giving Rage a miss this week as I'm really not a fan of The Reels. No offence to anyone that likes them but they aren't really the kind of eighties I love, maybe too alternative for me. I also found their cover of Bad Moon Rising to be one of the worst songs and videos of the eighties.
Any unrepeated Countdown is good though, so for you guy's sake I hope you get a useful episode.

"(Last Night) I Didnt get to Sleep At All" Gary. Makes me actually like the original!!

I forgot about Bad Moon Rising, somewhat different to the CCR version. Dont mind it, but yes the video clip was terrible.

Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

With the tone of this thread, I suppose to me liking the reels would be akin to some sort of confession, but their music (1980 to 1987) was right in the path of my childhood.

Like Wham, Pseudo Echo, Laura Branigan, Donna Summer, Culture Club, Australian Crawl, Wa Wa Nee, Icehouse, Bucks FIzz (I do have all eight of their albums, ha um), and so forth, they were one of the groups that were to me a major influence.

So yeah, some may cringe, but I actually love "Love will find a way", "After the news", "according to my heart", "shout and deliver", "this guy's in love with you", and "bad moon rising", and just cannot go past their rather bizarre version of "love grows where my rosemary goes".

But having said that, and from the point of being a reels fan, frankly I've seen enough reels on rage from the last 5 years - please rage give them a rest.

I don't think it's a matter of people not liking/slagging off The Reels as much as it is us not wanting rage to repeat that concert AGAIN, or repeat an episode of Countdown that has already been re-aired, which could well happen given that 2 repeats have already been aired this January (including Rock Arena). Plus The Reels have been featured heaps of times over the last 5 or so retro months. Given that they weren't exactly a huge band with massive influence, it's over the top.

Thought they might have covered Aquarius - now that would be interesting. Their cover of Bad Moon Rising is not too bad.

Re: Retro Week 4 - The Reels?

Very happy that they are showing the April 3 1983 episode of Countdown as I had fears of a repeat of something that had already been shown. It has both my favourite Men At Work track (Overkill) and Eurythmics track (Love Is A Stranger).

Overall not a standout episode for 1983 but to see any unrepeated Countdowns is a fantastic bonus.

They will now have to dig deep in the vaults to find something else by the Reels for future Retros.
