COUNTDOWN IS BACK THIS JANUARY, 2019 ... ON rage !!!!! Stay tuned below with regular Countdown full archival information for each Countdown episode rage shall be airing every Saturday throughout January ...
Fantastic that they are going to play a night of rare clips. We need more specials on Rage.
Agreed. Whilst there have been some brilliant guest programming episodes, the specials are usually more diverse and feature fewer common-as-muck/overplayed videos.
Please get onto rage on facebook and ask for them to play just 1 Countdown episode as part of the vault special. I have and I hope you will too. Cheers.
Whilst I'm not pleased about the Vault special being postponed, I'm glad to hear it's not scrapped altogether. I suppose it works out better than if it went ahead, but then the election coverage ran overtime, eating into it... Stupid ABC though, they've got ABC24 for election coverage ad nauseum if people want to view that (like we haven't heard enough about politics in the last 3 years).
It’s special time on rage! This time round we have ventured into the archives, dusted off the tapes and dug up a truckload of rarities for an incredible rage Vault Special. Some of these clips haven’t been played for decades and aren’t even on YouTube, but there are plenty of classics in there for you to sing along to as well.
The playlist has been compiled by our expert Archivists, Producers and viewers, and features everything from disco to hair metal, 90s techno to R’n’B, hip-hop, new wave and plenty more. Included are 808 State, Twisted Sister, Yoko Ono, Heart, Steve Vai, Rockmelons & Deni Hines, Taylor Dayne, Severed Heads, Van Morrison, 2 Pac, Ratcat, Suzanne Vega, X, Stevie Wonder, ZZ Top and a stack more.
There's some OK artists mentioned, but I can't say I'm that excited about the blurb, but that equates to about an hour of programming... there's potentially 6 more hours where Rage can redeem themselves, but R 'n' b, hip hop, and hair metal are still to come.
I wouldn't mind seeing Taylor Dayne's 'Heart of Stone' clip (though it's a bit boring), but no doubt it's probably 'I'll Be Your Shelter' (as someone suggested that on either the Rage forum or Facebook). I'm guessing the 808 State clip will be 'Ooops' featuring Bjork, which is OK. I'd love if the Heart clip is 'What About Love', but I think someone asked for 'Will You Be There (In the Morning)'.
I think I suggested Suzanne Vega's 'Solitude Standing' ages ago (not specifically for this special).
I wouldn't mind seeing Ratcat's 'Baby Baby', but wouldn't put on my list.
Some OK stuff, including a few I suggested (though mostly ages ago):
EDIE BRICKWELL AND THE NEW BOHEMIANS What I Am
ALANNAH MYLES Love Is
THE SMART E'S Sesame's Treet
AMII STEWART Knock On Wood
VANESSA PARADIS Joe Le Taxi
THE ADVENTURES Send My Heart
THE ADVENTURES Broken Land
BLACK Everything's Coming Up Roses
MICHAEL DAVIDSON Turn It Up
GYAN Wait
BTW Jason, I've got Nik Kershaw's 'One Step Ahead' sourced from an official promo VHS source, with no logos/watermarks etc. over it and the complete video.
rage's 'VAULT ' Special this weekend is BRILLIANT! rage have yet again included a nice portion of my requests being: NIK KERSHAW - One Step Ahead, KISSING THE PINK - Certain Things Are Likely, THAT'S THAT - Give Me Rhythm, SERIOUS YOUNG INSECTS - Be Patient, HEARTBEAT UK - Jump To It , THE FAN CLUB - I Feel Love, MICHAEL DAVIDSON - Turn It Up and TALK THAT WALK - Surface Tension ... OMFG!!!!!!!
AND 80% of the rest is just WOW with DANCE LIKE A MOTHER - You Ain't So Tough which I requested for years and finally it's here ... Fun Boy three, The Associates, Chic, Plastic Bertrand, Amazulu, Cameo, Tatsuhiko Yamamato, Phil Seymour, The Buggles, Black, Real life, Soft Cell, Michael Sambello, Dollar, Lene Lovich and Herp Albert's 'Keep Your Eye On me' which I haven't seen on rage since 1989! OMFG!!!!!! And sooo much more!!!
PLUS: THE COLOURFIELD & SEVERED HEADS !!!! AHHHHH!!!!!!
Great stuff! Some I'm not familiar with, so it will be a learning experience. . Disappointed that 'Paramonia' this morning wasn't the one with Max Headroom .
Hey, Jason and Guru, thanks for adding your support to a Countdown in the vault special. We tried! Cheers.
Quite pleasantly surprised. There's a lot of good stuff on there.
Sooo much good stuff, it's too good to be true! It's NON STOP amazing, that goodness there are a few toilet breaks with 'ONLY' 5% of material I don't care for (hehehe)
That certainly was an interesting episode of rage, with many clips I hadn't seen before (and songs I didn't know). Loved most the 70's disco stuff they aired.
One thing though - did anyone else notice the audio for Gyan's 'Wait' was a split second ahead of the video? (resulting in bad lip-syncing throughout) It definitely isn't like that in other copies of the video I have. Maybe someone at the ABC re-did the audio on the track and got it out of sync?
Nice to see the watermark disappeared throughout Michael Davidson's 'Turn It Up' and for a few clips after (that I was less interested in though :( ).
This special makes me wonder though... if Rage/their archivists can find videos for songs that didn't even scratch the top 100 here from the 70s/early 80's (e.g. the Syreeta clip they aired), how come they sometimes still can't seem to find later stuff that they actually aired during the top 50/60 (e.g. Kylie Mole)?

Yes, Gyan was out of sync. The Syreeta clip Quick Slick was simply AMAZING! Maybe they can find that as it's a lot more worthy than Kylie Mole (hahahaha)
I was going to mention Gyan too! Not happy as it was one of my faves off the list and I can't believe it was the last song of the night! although it did finish the night on a high. Her follow up 'It's Alright' is just as good, if not better, but I think only scraped into the Top 50.
What Countdown episode did Amazulu come from? I had no idea they appeared on Countdown?
I really thought rage had a video for 'Automatic Man'
First time I've heard Kissing The Pinks 'Certain Things Are Likely' and the beats sounded so much like Mel & Kim's 'Showing Out'. Did they have any affiliation with Stock Aitken & Waterman?
Guilty Pleasure - I Never Knew Love Like This Before.

Didn't matter for me as I don't really care for Gyan (oooops) Went to bed just before it came on as all my highlights were already played...
OMMMMG Nathan, I didn't realised as I was watching that Michael Davidson and Talk That Walk were logo free, watching again now and noticed thanks to YOU!

I can resync the vid with CD or mp3 audio... well, as long as the audio matches the video speed (occasionally they don't quite match). If it works out I can add it to the 2+ years old trade you're still waiting on from me
'It's Alright' dented the top 50 for a week... at #49. 'Black Wedding Wing', the #93 follow-up to these two, was her best IMO.

It was also the first time I've heard it, and I thought the same thing
Just looked it up on discogs.com, where it says:
Credits
Mixed By – Phil Harding
Producer – Peter Walsh
Phil Harding mixed a lot of the Stock/Aitken/Waterman stuff, and he seems to have made a large contribution to their 'sound'.
According to a wayback machine archive of a site (no longer online) that had an extensive S/A/W discography, 'Certain Things Are Likely' was released in the UK in February 1987, which was 5 months after 'Showing Out' came out there... so Showing Out preceded it.
Nathan, just watched back Gyan's 'Wait'. The only bits out of sync are the Black and White sections but when she sings in the colour scenes it matches, how very STRANGE???!!!

WOW, first time you guys have heard KTP with Certain Things Are Likely? One of my FAV PWL tracks evvvvvver, been requesting it for bloody years and FINALLY last night it happened!!!! And yes, always picked up that the major keyboard sound in Showing Out is the same in Certain Things Are Likely
The coloured sections appear to match in 'Wait', Jason, because most of the scenes that show her lip syncing are when she prolongs the 'waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaait', where her mouth is more or less in the same shape throughout. I'm pretty sure they're not actually in sync though, as I also noticed it during the 'that he promised too many years from now' bit which is also in colour.
I don't know if you guys noticed but a couple of clips especially The Takeaways, the quality was very poor. This video in particular looked smudged not sharp, where do you think they sourced this from?
If anybody wants a better copy of Russia Rocks by The Takeaways then I have a much better clean video!!
And by the way, i can't believe 2 bands with the same name came out so close together. If I didn't know that Russia Rocks was another band, I would have thought there was a new single by The Takeaways from Sweet and Sour!!!
And Michael if you would like the proper video of Automatic Man I am mre than happy to share it with you? If you also want Gravity (Youtube link attached - from my youtube channel) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ytas17Y2yyU) then i can give you both.
Thanks Lee. I'll check out your channel on YouTube!
BTW - I had no idea there was another group called The Takeaways. I thought it was the Sweet & Sour mob and maybe they released another single, underground or something mid to late 1985. I kept telling myself, no can't be, so I had to record it and check it out in the morning and yes, I was disappointed.

Yes I noticed several of the clips looked very ordinary indeed. Perhaps it was the way they were dubbed into the Rage library. Bit disappointing really.
It didn't click until I watched The Adventures 'Send My Heart' on this special (had only previously seen it on youtube) that the singer is the same guy who appeared in Bananarama's 'Shy Boy' video! He was Sara's (the blonde one) boyfriend at the time.

I knew the Bananarama link with the singer from The Adventures. My friend and I were watching last Saturday and I told her before they came on that The Adventures were on the list who was going out with whom I thought was with Keren. We were also saying how much better he looked than in Shy Boy
