Re: sharing our old music charts...?

"Brass In Pocket" may not have been a No.1 in the UK? . Let's hope it was truly a No.1 here in Oz.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

I have lots of chart books from most states from all charts Vic Sydney Adelaide. These shows every song that made the charts from about 1959 to 2002.

Are these of any interest?

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Alright if I make the following suggestions? As I can appreciate they are many on here that would like to contribute, and no doubt they will be many different charts and formats that will be added. Just wondering if I may suggest as a starting point if we can start off with getting all the national charts added first, then later on radio station ones?

I'm only noting this as somebody commented that they couldn't relate to the 3XY charts as they didn't live in melbourne. I personally enjoyed looking through the 3XY and EON FM charts, despite the fact I've lived in Sydney for all my life.

I just thought if we start with the national charts, it would give us some direction, and at least a goal to work on, whether that be at a casual pace or whatever, I'm just saying this as a suggestion, and not wanting to push any way that things should be done. I'm worried if we're going to just add charts from here and there, it's going to become somewhat hit and miss and disjointed after a wile, and the project may loose focus and direction.

Hopefully I'm making some sense, as I just can't seem to find the right words.

Depends which chart #1 on Countdown, but only #2 on Kent Music Report.

So glad Countdown went with the Kent charts in June 1983!

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Mark, I like your suggestion about just starting with the National charts. I assume contributors of this project have less National charts than state charts, so it would be good to knock the National Charts on the head first. There is a chance if so many state and national charts are uploaded at the same time, it could be daunting to both the contributor and reader.

Exactly, and I think (not saying this would happen deliberately), but the project could fall into a state of disarray. Not only would they'd be so many charts, but double ups and accidental deletions.

Would somebody know if Google drive has FTP access? I just found the browser interface rather clunkie. But having said that, it's certainly a good place to start putting all our charts up.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Just an update, I've just finished doing most of the ARIA charts from the second half of 1987. Aside from a few missing in December, I'm pretty sure I nearly have all that ground covered. I've put one up from Jan 1988 too for good measure.

Here's the link.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Mark, good going and well done! I have nearly all the ARIA charts from the second half of 1987, missing a few, so a few of yours will fill in the gaps. BTW - John, who is a regular poster on this forum, will be very keen on having a look at the 1987 charts, so your work will def. not go un-noticed.
Cheers.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Mark, are you just putting up the singles charts? That's fine by me, just wondering?

These 1987 charts are scans I got from a long defunct website, and most of them seem to be singles were most of my interest lies. The vast majority of material I've collected from both physical copies and downloads of the internets are singles charts. My physical chart collection doesn't start until October 1989.

So all up, all my ARIA charts are the ones I placed up from 1987. My physical ARIA charts start from late 1989 onwards. I don't have much from the 80s. What I do have are my own top 40 charts which I've compiled since March 1979. These were compiled from listening to 2SM, 2UW, 2Day FM, Triple M, and watching Countdown, WROK Rock, Sounds Unlimited, Wavelength, and Video Hits.

So in the end, I've pretty much put up my entire 80s ARIA chart collection, except for late 1989, which is not much.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

I was listening to 'All The Hits' Volume One, 1986 - last night and was wondering if anyone has an Aria Singles chart from late Feb or March 1986 around the time when the songs on this compilation were hits. Much appreciated. I looked on the database here and nothing close.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

The Kent Report (official Australian Top 40) was reproduced in TV Week for a while in the early 80's

Michael
I don't have any ARIA's but have all the EON FM and 3XY Melbourne charts for that period - they would have been similar to the national charts. Here is the Eon one for Feb 27 1986.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Cheers Guru. I thought you or Nathan would come to the rescue.

Re the Kent Chart from TV Week above, I had no idea that Diana Ross was dating Gene Simmons in 1980. Funny!

G'day nathan

Very nice find mate, here is another one where a guy obviously has way too much time on his hands

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Hi Lee, just checked out the link. Wow, very full on. A bit of a gap there as it goes up to 1983 and jumps to 1987 and straight to 1990. I get the feeling the author is very much focused on 60's to early 80's? I do like the selected compilation albums for each year.

Hey Nathan, just checked it out. Love the commentary he makes, makes it a lot more interesting that just reading the chart. Like reading the posts too.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Nathan, do you know if Aria released an end of year top 50 singles and albums of 1987? and previous years? Do you know where I can obtain them?

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

TBH, I think the Australian Music Report (AMR) factored a single's whole chart run when compiling these year-end charts, rather than it being based strictly on sales. That's why, e.g. 'Dancing In the Dark' is #1 for 1984, despite peaking at just #5. A similar thing happened with ARIA on the 1992 year-end chart, when 'November Rain' was listed as the 2nd biggest seller of the year, despite peaking at #5 - but that one was a lot more believable, as 'November Rain's spent 24 weeks in total in the top 10 during 1992/3.

When I look at my database of weekly charts, 'Dancing In the Dark's chart-run was:

debuted 28/5/84 -
53-45-41-26-26-19-21-19-17-13-10-13-11-10-9-7-5-5-6-8-6-7-10-12-17-24-21-25-26-
32-(2 week Xmas break)

continuing in 1985:
35-37-40-41-41-41-45-45-41-38-39-30-25-23-23-25-24-28-33-43-46-44-59-61-64-69-86
-92-92-88-90-92

with its last chart appearance on 12/8/85.

It peaked at #5 in Sept 1984.

Given DITD's whole chart run, I could see it topping a year-end chart. But given that over half of its run was in 1985, and it spent 'just' 11 weeks in the top 10 in 1984 (several higher-charting hits would have spent more weeks in the top 10), I don't see how it would have topped the year-end chart in 1984 based on sales in that year alone.

The chart-run of the #2 single of 1984, 'It's Just Not Cricket' was as follows:

debut 4/6/84:
4-2-2-1-1-1-2-3-4-5-7-10-12-12-16-22-24-34-41-43-55-68-73-77-77-79-72-66-75-(2 week xmas break)

continuing in 1985:
73-73-71-69-72-67-78-79-85-82-89-91

Comparing the 2 during their 1984 chart-run only:

peak: DITD #5, IJNC #1 (3 weeks)
weeks in top 5: DITD 2, IJNC 10
weeks in top 10: DITD 11, IJNC 12
weeks in top 20: DITD 19, IJNC 15
weeks in top 40: DITD 27, IJNC 18

OK, maybe it is possible that DITD sold more overall, based on its hovering power in the lower half of the top 40.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Wow, this is amazing. Thanks. Looking at the '87 singles charts, I found it interesting that 'Too Much Ain't Enough Love' which was a No.1 for Jim only reached #44 in the end of year charts. Perhaps it was because it debuted so high in the charts and continued selling in '88?

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Nathan, any chance you have the Top 100 albums of 1987?

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Thanks a million. I was chasing this info up for a friend as well.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Can you post the end-of-year single charts from the 1970s please?

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Actually you can find a stack of year end charts posted here:

http://australian-charts.com/forum.asp?todo=subforum&subforum=48

You'll have to scroll through to page 4 to get most of the 70's year end charts.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Hi there I've got a box of 3xy top 40 charts from feb 1974 thru to 1986 with just about every week if anyone's interested. Have never been able to part with them.

About 10 years ago that would have been a huge find and worth $1000's potentially but a huge archive collection of 3XY charts turned up around 2006 with about 50-100 charts for just about every week. I finished off my collection for the period 1979-88 at approx $2 per chart and a few dealers bought massive amounts and have been feeding them through ebay for up to $10 each.

I think most collectors of 3XY charts would have near complete sets now and would just be looking for gap fillers. I imagine that you would not want to break up your collection for that purpose so it may be hard to pass off the entire set if you were looking to move on from them.

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Hi there ohnoitisnathan. Just reading some of your posts, and wondering if you have a complete listing of the Aria (Kent report) top 50 weekly from mid 83 right through to end of 89 ? I've been chasing it for quite a while and can't find any complete listings from various sources.

thanks
Todd

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

I sent you an email Todd.

There's a guy who posts scans of the ARIA top 50 singles chart from 25 years ago in a blog:

http://chartbeat.blogspot.com.au/

That's me! Thanks for the plug, Nathan.

And thanks for anyone who's come along to my site to read. Next year, I'm going to carry on in 1990 with my 25 years ago posts but I was thinking of also adding a 30 years ago post each week and heading back to 1985.

But I need a handful of charts from 1985 to do that. Does anyone have scans of the ARIA charts dated:

January 20, 1985
September 1, 1985
September 15, 1985
November 10, 1985

Re: sharing our old music charts...?

Looking forward to it Gavin. I do love music from 1990 and 1991, and to see weekly Aria charts from 1985 will be fantastic.

I have those 4 ARIA charts. Here is the Sept 1 chart.
