Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Hi all

I have been talking to one of the staff at ARIA recently and was discussing the 'this week in aria chart history' feature on the aria website. She emailed me a copy of the Aria Chart - The Top 50 Singles and Albums from the week ending 9th June, 1985. If you would like a copy email me and I'll flick you the attachment. PS - I'm doing this just to share some good stuff!

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

This is awesome - I'll have to print them out. You really are the Guru! Cheers.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Michael
I have somewhere around 600-800 charts from late 70's to late 80's and even a pile of about 400 from the 90's (1990-98 from memory) when I used to record the Rage Top 50. I just chose a few random ones just to see if I could remember how to use Photobucket. I didn't include the albums charts as that would have been to hard to fit in.

Glad you find it of interest.

If there is a particular date you are after I should have a copy for just about every week of some sort from late 1978 up to about early 1988 but most of the earlier ones are just the Victorian 3XY charts.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

These are GOLD guru. The good old days when i actually liked about 45 songs out of the Top 50. I used to have piles of these as well as the old 5AD charts from Adelaide. Great stuff!

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Wow, these bring back memories indeed.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Fantastic charts there. I only some from the 90's, but I do have a book of Aussie chart listings which comes in very handy.

and Jase - yes the old 5AD charts were very popular in Adelaide! Used to love watching Music Express and Trax - great local music shows from the late 70s/80's - good times indeed.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Hey Guru,

could I ask that you please post an Aria singles chart from early December 1986 on here?

All, don't forget this website that I drew your attention to a couple of years back:

http://australian-charts.com/weekchart.asp?cat=s&year=1988&date=19880904

(this is the charts from 4/9/1988)

This has all the Aria Top 50 singles and albums from mid 1988 to present. You just select the year and the week in the drop down.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Sorry Michael, I don't have too many ARIA charts from 1986-89 - most of mine are 1983-85 - so here is 3XY Dec 5 1986 and an ARIA from Dec 21 1986. Hope that is good enough. Most of my late 80's charts are 3XY and EON FM.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

I've got an excel document of the ARIA top 50 singles charts from its first chart (around May 1983) until December 1988. I can upload it and post a link here if anyone's interested (it's just the chart listings in typed format, rather than scans of the printed charts).

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Here's a couple I'd already uploaded to photobucket (note: I didn't do the underlining, these were from a bunch I acquired from a collector):

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

I really wish there was a way to access ARIA chart positions between 51 and 100 between June 1988 and December 1989. This was the period from when ARIA commenced producing the chart 'in house' (instead of licensing the Kent Report/Australian Music Report chart complied by David Kent), and before their full top 100 chart was available via subscription from January 1990.

This period was when I was really getting into music, and noted that many of the songs I liked best charted poorly/missed the top 50. The only hint of what came below #50 on the ARIA chart is through the 'Breakers' column at the bottom of the printed charts, listing the 5 releases outside the top 50 that have yet to crack the top 50, in order of chart position.

Sometimes the ARIA and AMR charts varied wildly in their chart placings outside of the top 50, e.g. Blue Zone's 'Jackie' peaked at #67 on the AMR chart, but just #99 on ARIA's, in 1989. The Cure's 'A Letter To Elise' peaked at #67 on AMR, but missed the top 100 altogether on ARIA.

The 'Chartifacts' column in the ARIA report gives a few hints of chart placings below #50 when that artist later charted in the top 100; but I've only been able to access these reports from 1994 through the Victorian State Library.

Some that I discovered through Chartifacts were:

Blue Zone 'Jackie' - #99 in 1989 on ARIA

Bomb the Bass 'Say a Little Prayer' - #54 in 1989 on ARIA

OK, enough chart nerdiness from me...

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Hi Nathan!-what are the chances of me getting a (photo)copy of the '87 Aria chart?

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Thanks Guru, late December 1986 is great. I wish Aria started printing, back then, the highest position each song has reached on the chart (ie with a 'HP' - like TW, LW, TI in the column).

Nathan, Thanks for the late October '86 chart. August '86 would have been the time I got into music and Countdown, so these would be the first bunch of songs that I knew.

Looking at the other Top 50 singles charts you posted, I have to say it's a shame that 'Drive Baby Drive' didn't chart in the Top 50 and like you, I would be interested to know where it fared in the charts from 51-100.

Thanks for the chart placing for 'Say A Little Prayer' by Bomb The Bass. I had always thought how the hell did that song get on 'Hits Now '89 Vol.2'?, because I had never heard it prior to the release of this compilation and always thought it didn't reach the Top 100. I assume it was probably a big hit in the UK? which is probably why it was put on this compilation...expecting it to do the same here.

Can you upload your excel link and post it here (or just email it to me). Does it have the highest position each song reached on the chart?

So, when did the rage Top 50 start? I remember watching it the first time in Jan '88.

'Drive Baby Drive' peaked at #65. How funny is the $9.99 RRP for the CD single... in 1987 dollars!

I'd never heard 'Say a Little Prayer' until getting 'Hits Now '89 Vol.2' on cassette either, but I'd heard *of* it - due to it appearing in the UK top 10 in Smash Hits, and also because I bought UK pop mag 'Number One' at the time.

Michael

Here's the download link. You need to enter a captcha code and wait a few secs for the link to appear on this page:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4IKOVY80

It only has HP for the ARIA in-house produced charts - i.e. from June 1988 onwards.

You can easily enough search the chart run for particular singles though, by doing CTRL F then typing in the name of the song (select search for Workbook rather than page though).

If you're an 80s chart freak, I recommend David Kent's 'Australian Chart Book 1970-1992'. I put off buying it for years, but found it a great read/resource when I finally caved and bought it - although it won't have the ARIA chart peaks from June 1988 onwards.

Michael

So, when did the rage Top 50 start? I remember watching it the first time in Jan '88.

The first chart countdown on Rage I remember seeing was when 'Got My Mind Set On You', 'Faith', or 'I Should Be So Lucky' was #1. However, I don't think I was aware of Rage's existence before this; so don't know if it ran in 1987.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Nathan,

I remember 2 of the first video's I recorded from the rage OZ Top 50 were Sinittas's 'Toy Boy' and Whitney Houston's 'So Emotional' and they were both 1987. I think the chart run down on rage started in very late 1987 and full on in 1988!

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

What clips, if any, do people have recorded from Rage in 1987?

A few that I've got (acquired through trades):

Mel & Kim 'Showing Out'
Kim Wilde 'Say You Really Want Me' (12" version)
Samantha Fox 'Hold On Tight'

All just have the artist's name in caps, with no song title listed.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

just like the early days of Countdown on rage. When the 5th May, 1985 episode was listed on the screen as 'APRIL 1985' What the?

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Thanks for the link Nathan.

I purchased the Aria Chart Book (1988-2008) last year off the aria website and it has highest chart position for each single.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Nathan, I used to have heaps of srtuff from rage (1987) but no longer...

I do have Bananarama's Venus 12"... with just Bananarama in big letters as well as some other Bananarama vid's I taped from rage with just the band name...

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

I've got Bananarama's 'I Want You Back' (Motown version) from Rage with just the band name in big letters; so they were still doing that in mid 1988.

What did they play on Saturday mornings before the top 50 began? Just random clips?

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Hey Guru Bob, not sure if ur still around on here, but I'd be hugely interested in getting my hands on some scans of whatever Countdown/ARIA charts you have from 1983-1987. Happy for you to get in touch via my personal email if you prefer.
cheers,
Matt

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Hi Matt
I am still around here but a lot less during footy season.

I do have a fair few charts from that era but no time to scan them unfortunately as there are too many other projects on the go - I am busy right through to November at this stage.

Nathan is the most knowledgeable on charts around here and it may pay to try the link that he mentioned.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

Michael,
can you please sent me the list of the Top 50 singles Aria Chart from 9th June, 1985?
Thank you.

Re: Aria Chart - 9/6/1985

I'm not Michael, but I'll oblige. The date on this chart is the 'week commencing' date. 9th June is the week-ending date (which appears on the printed ARIA chart).
