Starter

I am in need of either a complete starter or complete Bendex drive for my starter. Unfortunately the tag is missing off my starter so I don't know which Autolite starter I have. Engine is the 14L. If anyone knows of another make, model, or brand of starter that can be adapted to work I would love to know. Feel free to email or my cell is 319-201-0521

Re: Starter

Hey Matt
Member Phil Peters collected information a number of years ago about the 14L engine which he has in his car. Hopefully he'll see your post if not you might email him and see what info on the starter number you need and other information about it. If he doesn't respond in a couple of days, I'll send you his email address via email.

Re: Starter

Thank you, I know it is supposed to be either an Autolite MO-4102 or MZ-4012. I have had no luck on the wonderful world of internet on finding anything about either of these starters.

Re: Starter

Don .. they seem to have missed Star in Tech section for starters and AL numbers. The one you show hasn't the Bendix part which Matt seems to want. He's looking for complete or just the Bendix part for his 14L.

Re: Starter

My apologies Don. Tech page does have Star mentioned way down the bottom of the list on starters which is off the bottom of my Win 10 page. Just more problems with this awful Windoz 10 my son his put me on from Win 7. Got an explanation from my son why Win 8 and 10 are total mess with MSN using same programming for desk / laptop and hand held mobile devices, which doesn't work. Apparently Apple has two completely different programs one for desk / lap and other for handheld devices. Lots of complaints I saw about 10 and frustrations with users. Church also has 10 and I hear how they wish they had stayed on 7. Phil and I are trying to help a lad id a car in a photo of his gparents, and this fellow worked / fixed pcs and confirmed the same thing my son told me.

Enough about MSN. Matt is looking for the Bendix end of the starter from his posting.

Re: Starter

Correct, the Bendex is what I need, but I will buy an entire starter if need be. I messaged the seller on ebay and he does not have the bendex to go with that starter. The shaft size on my starter is 5/8" which according to the seller is the same on his.

Re: Starter

Offhand I don't know exactly which one but I think Model T's used the same drive. The direction of rotation is the same just check number of teeth on bendix.

Re: Starter

I had noted Bendix springs coming up on DMAC eBay connection and some say fits Ford T, Durant etc. Here's one 123733945115 and its partly correct in that certain models in those makes used that spring not all. Just like our 1928-29 63,65,66 Autolite MZ-4001 used NE--5L same as Ford A. Matches with my repro Chilton. Like the seller says make sure the part fits your application.

Looking in Macs Ford parts they have ...

Model T Starter Drive Assembly, 1919-1927 Part # 16-55680-1
Model T Starter Motor, Rebuilt, 6 Volt, 1919-1927 Part # 16-55755-1
Model T Starter Bendix Head, 1919-1927 Part # 16-55676-1
Model T Starter Bendix Drive Gear, New Gear & Ring Assembly, 1919-1927 Part # 16-55683-1
Model T Starter Bendix Spring, Heavy Duty Duplicate Of Original, 1919-1927 Part # 16-55684-1
Model T Starter Shaft Seal, Bendix End, Neoprene, 1919-1927 Part # 16-55764-1

So we know the Ford T spring fits and perhaps drive assembly or parts do ?

I don't have a cross reference book and my repro Chilton Interchange doesn't have T but starts at Ford A with spring NE-5L. The Durant's mentioned in Tech or above 1928-29 L2,M2,M4,40,55,60 Autolite MO-4102 or MZ-4012 are NE-4L springs. Also Star M and R 27 / 28.

Took me a few years to uncover Chilton parts are Shurhit part numbers. The 1933 Continental Beacon and Flyer used same NE-4L spring. Ace and De Vaux used NE-2R. Unless you had a conversion chart for Shurhit the Chilton is just good to see what other makes used same parts.

Re: Starter

To clarify, it is the Bendix service sleeve that is broken on my starter. It engages with the drive head when the starter engages. The spring and motor I have is in good shape. I also have a couple extra springs.

I just found and purchased last night on eBay a Bendix drive catalog covering 1926 - 1941 Bendix drives and all the starters they were used on. Durant was listed in the index of Auto Manufacturers listed. My hope is to finally get the actual Bendix part numbers. I will share them for the tech page once I finally get this all figured out.

Re: Starter

Not sure if this is any help but refers to Ford A and T sleeve which required special tools to install. Unknown if the T one fits our cars. Hopefully the catalogue you bought will provide clues what parts on various makes fit our vehicles. They were assembled cars using parts other makes used. Chevy taillights, Chevy heat sensor for the 1930 D, Dodge / Plymouth / Graham Paige beehive taillight lense, Essex door handles,. headlight lenses, Ford T split rims and so on. Yes have Rick add more info to the tech page. There's a project for someone to compile what parts fit our vehicles. Fuel pump was another Frank said.

SERVICE BENDIX SLEEVE

As the standard Bendix sleeve cannot be installed without special equipment, it has been necessary heretofore to replace the complete shaft assembly when the sleeve was broken.

To eliminate this condition, we are now supplying special service sleeves, which can be easily installed in your own shop.

Sleeve A-11357-A is for use with the present A-11350-C starter drive.

Sleeve A-11357-BR is for use with A-11350-DR service starter drive.

Sleeve T-2008 is for use with the Model T starter drive.

To install the new sleeve, place it on the shaft so that tongue “A” (see Fig. 809) in sleeve is directly over groove “B” on shaft, then, with a screw driver or small chisel, press the tongue firmly into the groove.

Re: Starter

From what I have been able to figure out it appears that the Ford T and A sleeve fits a.starter with 1/2" shaft. Of course ours is 5/8". I don't know if this is true for all the Ford T and A starters. I will hopefully know much more.once I get the Bendix catalog in hand. I have a complete Bendix drive for a Ford T, it looks identical in every aspect except it is for a 1/2" shaft. I tried to bore it, but it is to hard to do so.

As I told the wife, I love having a Durant, but a Ford model A would be so much easier, however being the oddball at the car show is more fun. LOL

Re: Starter

After much searching, I have finally come up with a replacement starter drive for the Autolite MZ-4012 starter on the Continental 14L engine. It is an Accurate Starter Drive part number 3-121C.
