My grandfather Clyde Walton sold vehicles made by Durant Motors in the 1920's from a garage located on Broad Street in Lansdale PA. In the 1950's when I was a kid the building was still being used as a garage for automobile repairs. This building remains in the family but is no longer an automobile repair business. There is a photo of the auto sales dealership showing the 'olden days', somewhere in the family. A 'then' and 'now' comparison would be interesting to some.

Well, I thought I'd finish up the list of dealerships that Bob Smith sent me and sat down at the computer and started to enter all of them. Got the list done, then I headed to Google and did a search for some dealerships that I only had the names and a street name for and no city or state. Well I found an advertisement in the Chicago City Directory for the 1920's and guess what I found and advertisement for a Durant Distributor in Chicago with a list of 37 Chicago and around the state Illinois Durant/Star dealerships. I guess I'm not done. I've been putting them in a list, but I think I'm going to try and put this in an Excel Spread sheet. But for now I'll add them on the list. States that I don't have any dealers listed yet are?

So if you have some literature you've collected and see if there is a stamp on the literature with a dealer name and address or live in cities in these states and get to the Library, see if they have some 1920's Polk City Directories or old newspapers and look for the Durant dealership advertisements and send me the information.

If someone had the time and patience, they can use Google News Archives and go paper by paper day by day and pick up car dealers US / Can / Oz etc. and the new models. Pick a newspaper that fits our time range 1921 - 1933.

There's one OZ paper The Sydney Morning Herald Apr 3, 1830 - Dec 31, 1989
Jan 8 1924 page 4 has a Dodge Brothers Car and truck ad as an example, Standardized Motors Limited 276 - 278 Castlereagh Street Sydney Aus.

I looked at that site and it would take a long long time to go through all those newspapers for Durant ads for sure. I have a subscription to "My Heritage" a genealogical site like My Ancestry which gives access to various newspapers too. Maybe I can look into some of the bigger cities or at least the state newspapers that I don't have anything on yet. So many projects, not enough time to get them all done.

Agree. Google Newspaper Archives had hundreds of papers you view for free or paid to view. Saw lots of my family info in Ottawa Citizen like gramps having a birthday party for his daughter in the 20's sort of thing. Didn't know my aunt worked for MetLife early 40's. Loads of Durant info and ads. Then something went funny and had people round the world upset with them for the mess that was left.
Can't recall what paper I started wading through a few years back near Lansing looking for ads and finally gave up going page by page, day by day. This is for someone who has nothing to do but go cross eyed.
We used newspapers checking on starting dates of plants and I recall one plant start date was off by weeks earlier. You never know what is hiding to disprove things or find new info.

My list of dealerships is growing fast and I will publish what I have soon. I found an ad in a Chicago newspaper that listed quite a number of dealers in Chicago and around Chicago which I added. It your at the library for anything, see if they have any old City Directories from the mid 1920's to early 1930's and look up any Durant, Star, Flint etc dealerships and send me their addresses. I'll add them to the list.
