Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

Thank you Norm. So from the star on the hubcaps, it's a Model C or early F. I'm guessing he bought parts here and there, and at different times. I did find 2 lower steering gear assemblies, one that bolts on and one that I would believe uses a horizontal pivot pin or bolt. The Frame is setup for the horizontal mounting pin which is part of the driver side front motor mount. I don't know if this helps determine C or F, but I was hoping it might. There are a couple fenders and a firewall laying by the chassis (tag said model F), but it is hard to say if they were part of the chassis or not.

I was wondering if someone had a picture from under the car showing the steering gear and the link connecting it to the Ball on the tie rod (a measurement would also be helpful in finding it).

Thanks,
Bill

Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

Again I am not much help as early Star used W4A engine for C but first of F also used W4A before it was changed to W5A.
1924 model year (don't confuse that with production year) model C Aug 1 1923 to Nov 1923.
1924 model year F Nov 1923 to July 31 1924.
In the Registry for 1924 model year F we have W4A's at beginning and W5A's towards the end.

Sounds like he just picked up parts here and there thinking perhaps to just use what parts he had to make some sort of Star. Sort of a Johnny Cash, "One piece at a time" caddy

As I mentioned its the Star lads who might help you what parts were used when. I'm at the the other end of Billy's vehicles with a 1932 Durant from Dominion Motors the former Leaside Durant Motors plant. Leaside became totally Canadian owned and operated Jan 14 1931 to make whatever it wanted, they decided to continue the Durant to 1932 and Rugby truck to end of 1933. The CEO pulled the plug on the Durant line in 1932 saying it was a long dead Co months before. Canadian Frontenac built Aug 1931 to Dec 1933. Reo also built at Dominion 1932 and later.

Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

Your frame is NOT a C model. It is either an F or early M. (Steering gear mounted with a horizontal bolt). I would need to see a pic of the frame to determine if F or M.

Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

Norm,
That's good information. Ok, what is the difference between the two 4cyl continental engines you mentioned W4A and W5A? The Difference I noticed in the motors my Friend Don had was one had 2 plates bolted to the side and the other had regular freeze plugs. I saw 18940 stamped on the brass ID plate of a motor with freeze plugs (It didn't have the two plates bolted on)... so that must be the earlier one. Maybe a displacement difference?

Don,
Good to know it's not a Model C, because I bought a model F Radiator (with the two tone Star). To better ID the chassis, what parts of the Frame would you like to see Pictures of?

Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

I just looked at the W5 spec sheet. It does have a larger displacement than the previous engine 152 VS 130. Why does the W5 have the 2 plates bolted on it?
Thanks Bill

Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

I'm glad Don has gotten involved as our Star man. Engine W4A 18940 is from a 1923 model C Sept 15 1922 to July 31 1923 and appears to be from the Long Island City NY plant.
As you have found out the W4A is 130.4 cui and W5A is 152.1 cui.
The shaded Star crest was 1925 model year F.

I need to see where the brake cross shafts are located and a look at the frame over the rear axle.

Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

Hi, here's a few pics of what I'm looking at. It's missing the cross shafts, transmission mount, pinion gear assembly... plus a lot more!

Don't know if the firewall tag and fenders are from this chassis. Thanks, Bill

That vin number is Lansing plant 1926 model year F Aug 1 1925 to Dec 31 1925. Rad crest the Star name on the Durant crest on the Star, with Durant Motors name in the white ring at bottom of the crest. Now Star is Durant Motors not Star Motors of NY.
See what Don says about the frame.

Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

Thanks Norm, that's interesting. How can you tell the model year ect? I looked in the star registry and 302321 fits in near the end of the 1925 group in the Lansing section. There is a red coupe 304620 made a little later with just a star badge on the radiator. But it could have been changed over the years.

Does the front fender look like a Star fender? The hubcap has just the star on it, no Durant crest, so that is probably an earlier 1925 model F?

Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

Don't go by that Registry in DMAC as its full of errors as we discovered. Two of us up in Ont work on his Registry of vehicles world wide adding as we find more to Steve's own Registry.
Not to get off track but do you see Star X in the durantcars Nope now that's odd as X came out same time as L. X was 4 cyl and L was 6 cyl.
Now check under Frontenac registry and you see vins with T as Leaside and G as Grand Rapids. Totally incorrect, Terry did not believe we used Alpha 1931 and later so put T. Only the Rugby truck continued the T. Frontenac is Canadian only, 1931 E 618 used E and 1932 E-670 used G. There was no Grand Rapids for Fronty. My 32 614 is J alpha. Goodness knows what Dominion Motors would have used if it continued to exist and ran out of the alphabet on models and years. They did get up to P for the 1933 C600 Frontenac. No point in showing more errors in durantcars.

Try this also in DMAC in tech area under Star vins. As you can see 302321 fits 1926 model year ... Note it shows Aug 1 1925.

1926 F 8/25 E-289987 - E-325000 L-298295 - L-325000 T-277534 - T-325000 C-280632 - C-325000

Remember what I said model years are Aug 1 of one year to July 31 of next year. Don't get confused production year versus model year plus vins are model year. That's Billy's thing up to Dec 31 1929 when they stopped that and model year would only be when a model is upgraded. So 1930 614 as example is Jan 4 to Dec 31 1930, 1931 is Jan 1 1931 to Jan 31 1932, 1932 is Feb 1 1932 to end of 614 in 1932.

Re: How to ID the year and Model of a Star Chassis

It is an F frame, (flat top side rails and arch crossmember over rear axle). The transmission is bolted to crossmamber and rear of trans is suspended on the brake cross rods. (Same as C model)
