Stuff like purchased oil pan gaskets are quite expensive and hard to source. Is there any reason why you cant just cut one out of cardboard?

There is a gasket paper you can make your own from. It is thicker than craft paper that I was using as a teenager but way thinner than cardboard. Something like sheet picture framing material might be a substitute.

Every oil pan gasket I've ever seen was made from cork. Use 1/8" thick.
