I got to drive Rosalies 30 6-17 coupe down to a ladies tea with the HCCA so she could attend that function. At a stop it goes into first or second very well. However from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd it grinds badly. I am well versed in double clutching either up or down. I have a suspicion the restorer used the wrong gear oil. So my question is for that trans what is the right gear oil? Steam 600 weight, or 90, or other? Should it be a heavy gear oil, or a light gear oil?
Not trying to be a twit here, but maybe the restorer didn't put any oil in the transmission. It wouldn't be the first time someone over looked that or thought the other employee was going to take care of it. Removal of the plug and checking the texture and smell of the oil the old fashion way may yield some clues as to what's in there now.
Most of our cars used the 600 weight steam gear oil. Snyders.com or Macs.com who sell Model T parts also sells this gear oil others do too. I get mine from Mac's.
