1928 Continental engine block clean-up

Hi everyone
I recently purchased a crack tested 4 cylinder engine block. Basically, it's in good condition but I want to de-rust the outside, clean it up and paint it before cleaning and oiling the cylinders. I'll then measure it up to see how much work it needs doing on it. I'm hoping very little, which will save me a bucket of money.

Anyway, I propose to soak the block in a water molasses mixture for a week or so. This has worked very successfully for me in the past. Then I can paint it and oil up the cylinders after that.

The question I have for all you experts: Will soaking the block in the molasses mix do any damage to the cylinder bores or valve guides?
