After I finished the eager little Durant started on the second try! How I have missed this car.
I took the starter around to a few local recommended repair shops and the ultimate answer always seemed to drift towards using the style spring that had worked fine before. I got one on eBay.
Putting it back together took even longer. The pin in the block that helps to locate the starter and keep it from shifting was pushed back into the block and it took a lot of finagling to get it out. In the end I drilled a hole behind it and blew it out with needle nozzle on the compressor. I changed the plug to a piece of steel stock that is now pinned in place with a set screw threaded into the narrow hole I drilled for access.
Now my biggest problem is to find a dry cleaner for whitewalls. Life is good.
Happy 4th!
