I recently got a new radiator for an engine that had been sitting for many years. The radiator repairman suggested that I put a screen across the intake to the new radiator, get the engine hot and flush the system several times. He insisted that I use a small mesh like a tea strainer. I did this and I can't believe the gunk I've been getting out. So far, it amounts to about a golf-ball sized bunch a junk. Without the strainer, I would have plugged up several tubes on the new radiator.
I'm still catching particles over an eighth of an inch in diameter so I'll keep draining and replacing the coolant. Since my Star sits for six months a year, I'm thinking of doing this on it as well.
