rear main seal

What kind of material do I use for a rear main seal?? And where can I get this stuff. Kind of looks like graphite impregnated rope . What size ?? Any info would help.
How does one go about putting it in to make a good seal.
I have the motor out and stripped so now I am sure it was the rear main seal that was leaking . Seems like I was not meant to get this baby on the road. I am going to do it anyway ,(if I live long enough)

Re: rear main seal

Ken, The rope you refer to is most likely asbestos impregnated with graphite. Most likely it will be near impossible to obtain considering the reputation and legislation re use of asbestos. Try your local bearing supply shop as they should have a replacement felt material. You may need to take either or both the lower or upper seal sectors with you for sizing. Keep at it mate, will all be worthwhile when you have the car on the road and can enjoy your time together.

Re: rear main seal

I used Ford 272 V8 rear main seal that included 2 rope seals and composition wedges for the side of the filler block, might be easier to find than Durant parts
