In Need of Pistons

I'm in need of a set of 2 7/8" pistons for my 14L. The 1929 14L and 15L engines shared the same pistons. If you have or know where I can get a set of new pistons that will fit I'd be grateful.

The standard piston has four rings and the size is:
Standard 2.874",
30 over is 2.877"
50 over is 2.879"

The distance from the top of the piston to the pin is: 1.999"

Re: In Need of Pistons

Hi Rick An Aussie company specialises in new pistons for old engines. I have them in my 15L. Their email is pistons@iweb.net.au

Rick:
Egge Machine at www.egge.com has pistons and other engine parts for the 15L and 15U engines in their online catalogue.

Re: In Need of Pistons

Rick,
Another source for pistons, you might check with J.P. pistons they are also located in south Australia, also may be one that Sid is familiar with if not the same one, they have a great site if you just want to read up on how their pistons are made...The pistons I bought were sold as "assemblys" which included pistons, pins and rings and are a modern reinforced aluminum cam ground piston...with the money exchange the assemblys and air freight cost less than Egge wanted for their N.O.S. pistons sold separatly and I had them at my door step in a week and a half.

Re: In Need of Pistons

Hi Rick,
I just got my 14L engine back from the rebuilders. They put new pistons in. The piston came from Egge Machine Company. Six .080 pistons for $990.00 for only the pistons - ouch!

Re: In Need of Pistons

Thanks everyone, I decided to go with JP Pistons in Australia. When I inquired they already had the specs. so I ordered 50 over. They are the same company Sid and Bill used and their price includes rings.

It's good to know we have another source for new parts.

Re: In Need of Pistons

Rick,
JP Pistons are very good, I had some problems with an engine in which a circlip failed on No. 3 Gudgeon and had to get another block fom Sid Semple. JP made 40thou. oversize for me at a reduced cost and I have done about 2000 Kilometres since with very good indications. David Cornell of Albury did the bearings etc. and shaved the head to the limit marks. I have 140psi per cylinder as against 80psi of a standard engine. We also had head gaskets made in Melbourne from non asbestos material. A little expensive but no hassles with new regulations re using asbestos. If you need to source let me know. Will need a paper pattern as there is some differences in heads over the life of the 14 & 15Ls. Regards, Phil Donoghoe

Re: In Need of Pistons

Three weeks to the day I placed my order, a package from JP Pistons arrived on my doorstep. It contained a set of new pistons 2 7/8 at .50 over, rings and pins included!

Wow! That's great service and the price even came in under their quote. I'm a happy camper today!

Sid and Bill, Thanks for the tip!
