Just watched a programme on the raid, which took Johnny Johnson (86 years old now)back to the dams and also to the site where his Lancaster (T for Tommy)crashed over The Somme some years later. It was the only one that had a machine gun fitted to the under side on the pre-raid trials, and guess which bit the archaeologists found? What also came to light was a previously unknown photograph of the Sorpe dam after Johnson's bomb has scored a direct hit. It did not breach the dam, only one plane out of the planned five got to fly over the dam, but boy ...... what a crater it made and it came very close to breaching it.
Not a bad programme, covered by comedian Stephen Fry and during which Johnson gets to rethink a few of his long held views.
