Cleaning paint from silver

I have just inherited a large amount of silver from a European relation. She went through a gilded stage and painted her beautiful silver candelabras gold. Another beautiful piece still has a silver bottom but painted gold top. How do I safely remove the paint from the silver? I thought of using acetone but would like some expert advise before I start. Using my fingernail I have been able scrape a way a little of the paint.

Thanks very much.

Re: Cleaning paint from silver

Hi Jane,

I have used, with grerat success, the following product:

Ready Strip by Back to Nature
A non-flammable, biodegradable, non-combustible remover that won't harm silver. Contains no methylene chloride! It's heavy-based so it can be painted on the object without running, then washed off.
