pitted silver

I have some flatware that are pitted you can feel the pits with your fingernail, there is slight discoloration to the spots. What would be my best course of action shy of professional care? Would a buffer and jewlers rouge do the trick? Thank you ron

Re: pitted silver

Ron, If your flatware is plated I suspect there is not much you can do to remove the pitting without removing the plating. If Sterling your flatware will do well to be rubbed with something a bit more agressive than rouge. I might suggest Semichrome polish on a rag. Do not use a buffer. The chances of damage are much greater if you use a buffer. When the pits are clean use the a commercial silver polish and wipe clean with soft cloth.
