I was very sad to be told by his Daughter, Jane, that Richard Packer ( I knew him as Dick) passed away, peacefully, yesterday, 21st April 2017.
He was my very first P.K. and the first Lighthouse Keeper I met when I turned up at Lynmouth Foreland on March 1st 1971. He was a very kind and tolerant man at a time when I was an "angry young man" determined to put the world to rights.
He calmed me down and put me on the right track. I was only with him for a month that time but delighted to spend another month with him, just over a year later, on Flatholm.
Richard was one of life's Gentlemen, with a capital G, and I will always remember him fondly. Condolences to Jane and his son, Mike, I look forward to seeing them both when they next stay in the ex-keeper's cottages at Nash Point, where they spent a good deal of their childhood.
