Information Brief and Guide for Promo Output:
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2001
COMMEMORATION IN THE PHILIPPINES
-------------------------------------------------
WORLD CONTEXT AND THEME: WED is celebrated on
the 5th day of June, every year on the basis of
a resolution of the United Nations way back in
the early 70s. Worldwide, the annual commemora-
tion is led by the UN Environmental Programme
(UNEP). The theme for this year is: "Connect to
the World-Wide Web of Life"
PHILIPPINE COMMEMORATION FOR 2001: WED2001-Phil-
ippines is a nationwide commemoration lasting
about four months that culminate in the first
week of June, specifically on June 3 and June 5.
It seeks to "Mobilize Families for Environmental
Education, Action and Cooperation" and carries
the slogan, "GREEN FAMILIES FOR GREEN COMMUNI-
TIES." It is being spearheaded by the WED2001-
Philippines Network, convened by the UN Inform-
ation Centre (UNIC) in Manila and composed of
various government and non-government entities,
with an inner core of 15 non-government organi-
zations, with the support of the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
NATIONWIDE CAMPAIGN: The network has started
mobilizing organizations, with individuals
involving their family members, in spreading
and discussing a "Declaration of Commitment to
WED2001-Philippines" (read/sign its text by click-
Ing links to WED2001 pages from the opening menu
of http://earth.web.ph) and the wide dissemina-
tion of copies of a mini-poster to be colored and
posted by families all over the country (available
by fax upon request). These have started spreading
in Metro Manila, Baguio, Iloilo, Leyte, Laguna,
Batangas, Quezon, and other cities/provinces.
Members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines and
the Girl Scouts of the Philippines nationwide,
along with their respective families, will color
and post this by June 5.
