Firstly , it's not necessary to have the www.

For example:

http://www.mywebsite.com & http://mywebsite.com

are essentially the same (well they are not actually - but that's a seperate canonical issue)

Having no www. will not prevent the search engines from picking you up, as long as you have an index page and are kinda visible, either through submission or linking...

What is your domain/website name, that would help....
