It's me responding to my own post. I figured it out. The file was being uploaded as index.htm not html. A quick fix. Can't believe I've been at this for two hours and it was in front of my face the whole time.

For the benefit of others in the same position:

1. When you enter your domain name your browser first looks for a file called index.html, if it doesn't find that it looks for index.htm

2. When you register for hosting with Bravenet an index.html page is created with the "under construction" message as a place holder until you upload your site.

3. If you call your home page index.htm then it will be "hidden behind" the index.html unless you delete it.
