so need to make sure your pictures are optimized and an appropriate size

if taken with digital camera and just put them up they can appear to be one size but in actuality are another one altogether

and make sure the pictures are in jpg or gif format

There are two steps

1. Upload picture files to your web space
2. Update the page to display the picture files.

At a guess you only did step 1.
How you do step 2 depends on what editor you are using to build your site.
