I am new to bravenet and opened up an account today. I am trying to access ftp through smartftp but the host is not letting me in. Is this the server problem or am i doing something wrong?

Could be several things, most of which are down to you. First have you actually registered for web hosting? As every one of the 30 plus Bravenet services has multiple paid and free options none are available by default, you must explicitly register for what you want.

Once you have registered for hosting then log in to your account and select "manage hosting". There is an FTP option there that will give you all the parameters.

Smart ftp is too complicated for its own good. I would recomment using (open source) FTP commander. It is simple, easy. :)
