Hungerford 5 Lydney 1
As my last post re the Ardley game was frogmarched off this site at the request of an unnamed Blazer Who Must Be Obeyed due to adverse comments about the refereeing I will have to guard my biro. The referee today wore black, carried a whistle, and had a laissez faire attitude to some of the laws of the game.If late tackles and shirt tuggging is o.k. with him, then it is ok with me. His assistants also wore black and one raised his flag a lot for offside. He likes the exercise, fine. I stress that eveything I post is my personal opinion only and in no way reflects the views of anybody living or dead at Hungerford FC.Now, for the game. The main gossip point behind the goal was whether Concannon was going to snatch the Leagues Golden Boot at the last kick. He had to score five, I gather. Well, he scored four, all good sniffer goals, and the speed with which he ferried the ball from the back of the net to the centre circle for kick off proved , once and for all, that Conners possesses genuine pace. I congratulate him for his season and I am sure that when I die and they open me up they will find inscribed on my heart the words "Concannon should have started against Whitley Bay" Hungerfords fifth was a rasping shot from Jones, the goalie made like a croquet hoop, forgot to close the legs and regretted it.My Aunty Joan tells a similar story.Lydneys late consolation came via the penalty spot, converted immaculately by my nephew Joe Macklin. So at least somebody in the family scored.A word about Lydney. They played with strong hearts but tired legs. With North Leigh winning the League by just two goals, am I the only one feeling slightly sorry for Almondsbury. What am I saying. We play the so-and-so's in the Final next Sat.
