Almondsbury 0 Hungerford 1

In the first game between these two sides at the Bulpit Hungerford dominated and lost. In this return, the Almonds dominated and lost. So life and football arent fair. On a well grassed but rain-greased pitch the Hungerford passing game fizzed but then slowly fizzled out as Almondsburys pressing game left Hungerford no time to repose (or pose) on the ball. Hungerford scored the only goal after 20 minutes, a cuiosity as the ball from a long hopeful cross seemed to drop between goalie and defender to hit the foot of Conners closing in and from there into the net. The inscrutable one will claim it as just another deadly efficient strike. And he will do it with a straight face. After that free kicks and corners rained in at the Hungerford goal but, somehow, it stayed 1-0 until h.t. The 2nd half was more even bot noticeable for the number of free kicks Hungerford gave away in dangerous positions. Most of Hungerfords indescretions, which were more than plenty, were petty pushes and nudges, feet left dangling etc. The Almonds, when they fouled meant it. Full blooded, no man left standing etc. The Almonds collected yellow cards, it seemed to me, Hungerford just collected pressure. Ten minutes before the death, Gosling missed a penalty after Edders had been brought down ,sending the goalie the wrong way and the ball the wrong side of the post. At the death both sides swung handbags just outside the Almonds penalty area (shades of the battle of Greenwich Borough) but no knuckles were launched, and the referee, quite sensibly in my view, handed a yellow card only to the two players rolling around on the ground, locked in an unloving embrace. Wrestling for Hungerford was Terry. The name of his opponent escaped me. The season still lives for both sides.
